My dog had a dead puppy. What immediate care does she need?

If there are more puppies and no progression of labor at this point then she needs to be seen by a vet. They have medication to give her to stimulate further contractions to continue the process. They can also X-ray her to see how many are there or do a c section if needed Since she didn’t take care of the precious puppies it is best to not let her have any puppies and bottle raise them yourself then get her spayed

This is a medical emergency - both her and her pups are at risk from infection if she has a dead pup inside her. She needs urgent assessment for any remaining pups/remnants and either induction or an emergency section/hysterectomy depending on findings as well as supportive treatment for her fever

It isn't unusual for a dead puppy to be born long after a healthy litter is born. It is likely that the puppy was stuck in the birth canal and took longer to deliver and died while being stuck, or it could have been dead in utero and was later expelled with the last placenta. Usually there is no problem with the mother provided she eats, drinks and takes care of her puppies. If she gets lethargic, or if she has smelly discharge from the vulva (greenish non-smelly discharge is normal) then she should be seen by a vet .

One important thing to consider is if your dog has any more puppies inside of her. If you are unsure then I would recommend taking her to the vet for an x-ray to see if any puppies are left. If she has not passed all the puppies by now she will need to have surgery to have them removed. If you were sure she has delivered all the puppies then her behavior is probably just due to anxiety and depression from losing her puppy. Give her lots of attention, love, and affection and she should be fine in a little bit. Help her get back to normal routine as this may help her feel better more quickly. I think it should be fine to let her outside with other dogs as long as you supervise them for the first few minutes to make sure everything is going to be OK. i'm sorry about losing the puppy. If they do not deliver all puppies and stop progressing in labor, the infection from the dead fetus and retained membranes can be fatal within 3-7 days depending on the size of the dog and how many were already delivered. It is best to seek medical care to see if they can induce contractions or do a c section to remove the infected parts

It appears indeed that your pug had a miscarriage. Hopefully she will give birth to the rest of the dead puppies within the next few hours. Take her back to the vet in the morning to make sure she has had all puppies and does not have an infection. She may need antibiotics depending on the condition of the dead puppies and herself, as she could become septic.

I'm so sorry you have lost some of Tanina's puppies. A dark green discharge can be seen for a couple days after delivery of a litter of puppies normally. My greatest concern is that she may still have some puppies in her uterus and ultimately this could cause a serious infection for Tanina. Since she is otherwise acting very normally, you may safely monitor her until your regular veterinarian can see her tomorrow. An x-ray can be taken very quickly to check for evidence of any remaining puppies in the uterus. If she starts showing signs of straining to pass another puppy, starts vomiting or acting very anxious or unusual, have her examined by a veterinarian right away.
