Pregnant Chihuahua has jello-like diarrhea. Is it normal or serious?

Hormonal changes can sometimes cause minor GI upset or diarrhea, however if the diarrhea continues or Mia seems in discomfort or is showing other signs of illness such as loss of appetite, weight loss, vomiting, etc, it would be best to have her examined by your vet to rule out any more serious issues.

You should monitor very closely for any signs of fever or weakness and also any indication of reduced body condition/muscle mass which can indicate reduced nutrition due to poor food intake and ongoing diarrhea. You should have puppy milk replacer in hand to help supplement feed the puppies and also advise your vets office of the impending delivery in case a cesarian section is required - these are quite common in chihuahuas especially in older mothers who may have reduced muscle strength. Any period of contractions longer than one hour or discharge longer than 2hours without delivery of puppies is cause for concern

This is not necessarily normal but it is also may not be a concern. To be safe I would recommend having her examined by your veterinarian. They can also check her stool for parasites which could be passed on to puppies, and you can discuss a plan for monitoring her pregnancy.

In a pregnant dog it could be due to hormones, impending labor, from worms or diet change (most put pregnant dogs on puppy food). I would contact your vet for medications since she is pregnant, start a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice and add in a probiotic like Purina Fortiflora. If Lucy is not fully vaccinated I would worry about viral infections as well. I wish you and Lucy the best!

Hello. As long as Lola is eating & drinking fairly well, nursing the puppies & seeming to be contented, she should be well. If you have not wormed her in the past few months, I would definitely take a stool sample to your veterinarian now to make sure she will not be passing any parasites to her puppies. Because some parasites are inevitable in puppies, & based on what & if your vet sees anything in the stool, you will need to start administering a wormer to the puppies starting at 2 weeks of age. It could be a results of pregnancy however I would recommend checking for parasites and making sure she is dewormed properly. YOu can try and over the counter probiotic to help firm up the stool with a bland diet for boiled chicken and white rice. However if she is not improving I recommend taking her to a vet for an exam

She may require medication to control her symptoms, but options are limited due to her pregnancy. If you haven't had it done already, x-rays will be taken to count the number of puppies she is expecting. This information will help you during to labor to know if she has had all the puppies or not.
