My dog is 5 weeks pregnant and has diarrhea. Is this normal or a concern?

This is not necessarily normal but it is also may not be a concern. To be safe I would recommend having her examined by your veterinarian. They can also check her stool for parasites which could be passed on to puppies, and you can discuss a plan for monitoring her pregnancy.

Decreased appetite is normal in the later stages of pregnancy. So no worries there, as long as she is eating portions of her food. Loose stool can also occur, but should return to normal after a few days, and she should still have normal energy level and not hide. Hiding in cats, when they typically are social cats, is usually an indicator that something is wrong. I would see how she does in the next day or two, and if the diarrhea does not resolve, then have her stools checked by your vet. She may have intestinal parasites, or it could be loose due to stress from the pregnancy. I hope that Mia's stools return to normal soon. Best of luck moving forward and take care. : )

It could be caused by hormonal changes but if it continues than she should be examined by a vet, especially if she becomes lethargic and starts vomiting. She could also have a parasite or infection and your vet can run lab-work to look for potential causes and determine if treatment is needed.

In a pregnant dog it could be due to hormones, impending labor, from worms or diet change (most put pregnant dogs on puppy food). I would contact your vet for medications since she is pregnant, start a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice and add in a probiotic like Purina Fortiflora. If Lucy is not fully vaccinated I would worry about viral infections as well. I wish you and Lucy the best!

Hello. As long as Lola is eating & drinking fairly well, nursing the puppies & seeming to be contented, she should be well. If you have not wormed her in the past few months, I would definitely take a stool sample to your veterinarian now to make sure she will not be passing any parasites to her puppies. Because some parasites are inevitable in puppies, & based on what & if your vet sees anything in the stool, you will need to start administering a wormer to the puppies starting at 2 weeks of age. Poor Ginger. The pregnancy itself can be stressful to your pets body and cause some diarrhea to occur. However it should resolve within a day or two if stress alone is the cause. If it doesn't improve or resolve then she may have intestinal parasites causing this. Try adding 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin (not the filling) to her food daily to add fiber and encourage hard stool formation. If things don't get better then reach out to your vet to see if they will would like to see her (depending on how late stage she is) for treatment of the diarrhea. Some dewormers and medicines are safe to use when a pet is pregnant and some are not. Best of luck and I hope that the rest of her pregnancy is uneventful and results in happy healthy kittens.

It could be a results of pregnancy however I would recommend checking for parasites and making sure she is dewormed properly. YOu can try and over the counter probiotic to help firm up the stool with a bland diet for boiled chicken and white rice. However if she is not improving I recommend taking her to a vet for an exam
