My dog just gave birth. Is her throwing up and diarrhea normal?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 5 months old | 70 lbs

My dog gave birth yesterday and all day yesterday she was throwing up and having a green, almost black diarrhea. Today she hasn’t thrown up, she still has diarrhea but it has gone back to its brown color, should I be worried ?

Hello. As long as Lola is eating & drinking fairly well, nursing the puppies & seeming to be contented, she should be well. If you have not wormed her in the past few months, I would definitely take a stool sample to your veterinarian now to make sure she will not be passing any parasites to her puppies. Because some parasites are inevitable in puppies, & based on what & if your vet sees anything in the stool, you will need to start administering a wormer to the puppies starting at 2 weeks of age. We use pyrantel pamoate every 2 weeks until 8 weeks, then monthly until the pups are 6 months of age. Thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

In a pregnant dog it could be due to hormones, impending labor, from worms or diet change (most put pregnant dogs on puppy food). I would contact your vet for medications since she is pregnant, start a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice and add in a probiotic like Purina Fortiflora. This can happen after delivery. offer her boiled boneless chicken and rice every 6 hours in small portions. if she is eating and not vomiting, continue with this diet for 2 days. After 2 days, you can put her back gradually on her normal food. If she continues having diarrhea, take her to the vet to get treatment.

It could be a results of pregnancy however I would recommend checking for parasites and making sure she is dewormed properly. YOu can try and over the counter probiotic to help firm up the stool with a bland diet for boiled chicken and white rice. However if she is not improving I recommend taking her to a vet for an exam

As long as she continues to eat well, this should slowly resolve over the course of the next 3-4 days. New mom dog has bloody diarrhea after birth. Is this normal?

The diarrhea could be related to eating the placentas and afterbirth, or could be a sign of another disease like intestinal parasites. I would recommend seeing your veterinarian for a physical exam and to discuss treatment for the diarrhea. While it's possible simple change like a bland diet and probiotic would be recommended it's always best to have a veterinarian take a look to make sure there's nothing more serious going on.

My dog just had puppies and is sick. Is this normal? What should I do?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Loki! I would have Loki seen on emergency or right at 8 am. I would want to be sure that there is no uterine or mammary gland infection, no retained puppies and that her calcium is normal. Low calcium is serious. If you have the ability to bottle feed the puppies until you can get Loki to the Vet then do that , if you don't then let them nurse. I hope this helps and I wish Loki a speedy recovery!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Cookie. She will need to see her veterinarian today. It will be very easy for her to become dehydrated from the vomiting and diarrhea. She may require medication to control her symptoms, but options are limited due to her pregnancy.
