Will my 9-month-old Pomeranian be hurt by mating in first heat?

Typically, the first heat cycle will occur between 6 and 9 months of age. It really depends on the individual dog and there is no way to determine when your dog will go into heat for the first time. You can have her spayed at 4 months, but you will likely need to take her somewhere else if your veterinarian won't do it. Waiting until 6 months should not pose an issue though. It's the age a large percentage of dogs are spayed or neutered.

Dogs go through a heat cycle only twice a year or so, so the chances that Rain got pregnant from one incident at the dog park are rather slim. Mating in dogs takes about 20 minutes, and typically involves a "tie" which includes the dogs standing with their rear ends together. While it isn't recommended to breed a dog on their first heat because they won't be physically or emotionally mature, it doesn't mean that Tanya can't survive her first pregnancy. I would wait three weeks from when she mated, and then take her into your vet. The vet can confirm her pregnancy, and discuss with you things you need to look out for during her pregnancy that can signify problems or times when you need to see a vet. At her age, she should no longer be having puppies. It is to much of a strain on an older dog. That does not mean, however, that she couldn't get bred by a male! I would consider having her spayed for safety as well as her general health.

The easiest solution is to have her spayed if you want her to be able to go to dog parks. If not, you will need to monitor her extremely carefully. A female in heat, but not yet ready to mate, will be very aggressive to approaching male dogs. She will only be receptive to males for a brief period during her cycle.
