Puppy has parvo. Can an emergency vaccine save my other dog?

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Parvo-virus is a very resilient virus that lives in the environment for a long time. For this reason, keeping the puppies, and their environments, separate for at least 2 weeks after Roxy is completely healed is recommended, and then I would clean Roxy's environment aggressively with bleach water, and keep the puppies away from the 'infected' environment for a week while you are cleaning it. The other puppy SHOULD be OK because she is vaccinated, however until she has her third set I would keep them separate, because as the first vaccines are being given, and as the mother's immunity is wearing down, there will be times when the second puppy is at risk. Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The first two doses of parvo vaccine were given correctly but the third one was given way too late. It would be safer to give Mocha another dose of parvo vaccine, about 3-4 weeks after the one she just had. That will make sure that she is fully protected and she is not any danger for the new puppy.

I am glad to hear that Esther is feeling better. Most of these puppies should eat a G.I. friendly diet and not regular puppy food for at least 10 days. Your veterinarian carries special prescription foods that are easy to digest and provide all the needed nutrients. As far as it goes with your other puppy, they should not be together until the other puppy is fully vaccinated. Vaccines do take about 7 to 10 days to take full effect. If you have questions about the efficacy of the vaccines, call your veterinarian. Vaccines given by the veterinarian tend to be more effective than vaccines given at home. Those puppies are cute! Unfortunately it is possible for both parvovirus and distemper to infect a puppy at the same time. This is especially more likely if they are in a shelter situation where diseases can be more easily spread. Parvo weakens the immune system leaving the puppy prone to other infections so if exposed to distemper the puppy would likely get sick from it. Both diseases (especially parvo) carry a guarded prognosis. They both generally require intensive medical care and if survived the puppy can end up with life long issues related to the infections. I'm sorry to hear these puppies may be effected. My hope is that if caught early they may have a better chance of survival but will likely require a lot of medical care. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Parvovirus is a severe gastroenteritis that affect puppies more often. This is a viral infection so there is no direct treatment for the virus so the treatment per se is directed at treating secondary bacterial infections and mostly helping with the clinical symptoms of vomiting, diarrhea and inappetence. This warrants ideally hospitalization with some cases being able to be managed with outpatient care depending on its severity. I recommend that you continue to follow up with a veterinarian who can institute therapy for Cleo as soon as possible. The quicker this condition gets treated the better the outcome tends to be. Hi there. Assuming Sophie has had her full vaccination schedule and appropriate boosters then the likelihood of her becoming ill with parvovirus is very rare. Of course, some animals don’t respond as well to vaccines as others, but that is a rare occurrence. If for some reason she does get sick and you have proof of vaccination given by a veterinarian then most vaccine companies will pay for treatment. However, if the vaccines were not given by a veterinarian they will not cover treatment. I hope she stays nice and healthy! Thanks for using Pet Coach!

The best thing to do to prevent parvovirus is to make sure that Bella is up to date on her vaccines, and to start the new puppy's vaccine protocol right away. The new puppy will need 3 series of vaccines: the first at 8-10 weeks, the second at 12-14 weeks, and the third at 16-18 weeks. Also keep the new puppy away from any dogs with an unknown vaccination status, and restrict her outdoor activities until she is fully vaccinated.
