Why is my older spayed dog suddenly incontinent and licking herself?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | 38 lbs

We have a Collie-cross, female, 8yrs old. She suddenly became incontinent this past winter. She also seemed more house bound and lethargic to a slight, but noticeable, degree. We had a urine test done and were told all readings were fine. Didn't persue any further disgnosis as Vet seemed to think it was most likely due to age in a spayed female. Getting worse tho and she doesn't go out to pee even when she realises she is leaking (just licks herself like crazy, even when door is open).

Poor Lulu! If she has been checked for underlying problems that could cause incontinence (such as diabetes, Cushing's disease, or chronic kidney disease), then I agree that it's likely her incontinence is due to being an older spayed female. I would recommend asking your veterinarian about medication to control this condition, such as Proin or DES (diethylstilbestrol) - these are quite effective at managing incontinence in most cases :)
