Why is my 8-year-old spayed dog leaking urine when relaxing?

I'm sorry to hear that Bijou has developed some leaking. Unfortunately we do see that in a number of spayed females. Proin is one of the most common medications that we will use for urinary incontinence, but there are several others that you can try as well. Urinary incontinence is a common problem in older spayed female dogs. Your veterinarian can prescribe medication to control this. I’m glad you’ve checked her urine and since it was negative then starting her on medication for incontinence is the next step. I usually start with Proin, and they can add another medication if that isn’t effective. These are prescription medications so you’ll need to talk with your veterinarian about trying one. This can be from a hormonal imbalance due to being spayed. If this becomes more frequent there is medication to control the urinary incontinence. They will recommend a urinalysis to make sure there is no medical problem in the urine then they can prescribe medication. Usually a low dose of medication needs to be given lifelong. Poor Lulu! If she has been checked for underlying problems that could cause incontinence (such as diabetes, Cushing's disease, or chronic kidney disease), then I agree that it's likely her incontinence is due to being an older spayed female. I would recommend asking your veterinarian about medication to control this condition, such as Proin or DES (diethylstilbestrol) - these are quite effective at managing incontinence in most cases :)

There are drugs that can be given to Layla to help with her incontinence. Medications often effectively manage this condition, and helps prevent accidents. Phenylpropanolamine helps strengthen the urethral sphincter, or there hormone treatment is another drug option. If medications do not work, surgery may be considered. I would speak to your vet about seeing if medications would be a good option for Layla to help her with her incontinence.

Some females will develop incontinence after the spay. This does make them more prone to urinary tract infections and I do recommend to have Amber visit her veterinarian. The doctor will check her for a bladder infection and if that is clear they will discuss starting her on a medication to tighten the sphincter. This will likely stop the incontinence. It is hard to say exactly what may be causing her urination issue without examining her first, but I can offer a suggestion. Sometimes spayed females can have a relation of the urethral sphincter causing them to urinate uncontrollably. The good news is this is very common and a medication called Prion can be given to help tighten the urethral sphincter and lessen the amount of accidents in the house.
