Spayed dog leaks urine, licks, smells fishy after UTI. What's wrong?

It sounds like Izzy may have a urinary tract infection. I would recommend taking her to see the vet and have a urine run to check for an infection. She may require antibiotics for it. If the smell comes and goes, then it is most likely from the anal glands. Dogs have scent glands on either side of the anus that release a stinky liquid that commonly smells fishy. If she is scooting or licking excessively, then I would have your veterinarian check her anal glands to make sure that they are not overly full. However if the smell is coming from her urine, then I would be worried that she has a urinary tract infection and would recommend having your veterinarian examine a urine sample. Good luck! Poor Lulu! If she has been checked for underlying problems that could cause incontinence (such as diabetes, Cushing's disease, or chronic kidney disease), then I agree that it's likely her incontinence is due to being an older spayed female. I would recommend asking your veterinarian about medication to control this condition, such as Proin or DES (diethylstilbestrol) - these are quite effective at managing incontinence in most cases :)

I would recommend a urine analysis to rule out complicating factors such as urinary crystals, stones or infection but incontinence is also a distinct possibility especially in a spayed female. There are effective medications which can be prescribed by your vet should other causes be ruled out

Horrible odors are usually caused by bacterial infections. So when Macie licks her vulva, she is massaging secretions out which should be odorless. It appears she has a bacterial infection since there is a smell. She could be suffering from a vaginal infection or a UTI, Peeing in the house and straining are cardinal signs of a UTI.I suggest you take her to your vet for an exam. Bring fresh urine (you can catch it with a kitchen ladle) or do not take her out to pee before you go to the vet, as the vet will need urine to examine. No this is not normal. It would be best to bring Tali to your vet to have her examined to see if her anal glands need to be expressed, or if there is an issue such as a urinary infection or urinary incontinence causing the leakage.

Vaginal discharge can be caused by a number of things. Both the urethra and vaginal openings exit the vaginal/vulvar area so discharge could indicate a problem with the urinary tract or with the reproductive tract. With any strange discharge, it is a good idea to schedule a veterinary appointment to check it out. If the discharge becomes cloudy, green or yellow in color, it is best to seek veterinary care as soon as possible as that may indicate something more serious such as a uterine infection (in unspayed females, but can occur if part of the uterine stump is left during a spay).
