Is my older dog at risk of parvo from a neighbor's infected puppy?

Parvo is highly contagious and affected dogs are lethargic, cannot hold food or water, vomit and have bloody diarrhea and eventually die of dehydration and sepsis if not treated. If your dog has had a full course of vaccinations and is older than 2 years then there is little chance that she has been infected as well. You should disinfect the garage and everything your mom's dog came in contact with using a bleach solution or disinfectant and do not let your dog run around in the area where the sick dog was until after it is disinfected. Watch for signs of lethargy, refusal to eat and general illness and if your dog shows these signs take her to a vet right away.

I'm so sorry to hear about your dog. If your other dogs are adults (over 2 years old) and current on their vaccinations, it is very unlikely that they would get parvo - this is almost always a disease of unvaccinated puppies. But, if you have other puppies or young dogs in the house, especially if they are not current on vaccines, then I would be concerned that they may catch it. The virus lives in the environment for years, so I would recommend cleaning everything that your puppy came into contact with using a diluted bleach solution.

If Rocky is vaccinated for parvo, he will be safe. If he's not vaccinated, the answer to your question depends on how long ago this dog had parvo. Dogs with parvo can shed the virus for at least two weeks after exposure.

The best thing to do to prevent parvovirus is to make sure that Bella is up to date on her vaccines, and to start the new puppy's vaccine protocol right away. The new puppy will need 3 series of vaccines: the first at 8-10 weeks, the second at 12-14 weeks, and the third at 16-18 weeks. Also keep the new puppy away from any dogs with an unknown vaccination status, and restrict her outdoor activities until she is fully vaccinated.

As long as Lola is only playing in your own yard with your other dog the risk for parvovirus infection is low. I would still recommend avoiding places like dog parks where you can't be sure of the health status of other dogs. It sounds like you've done a good job disinfecting your home - if the new pup is finished with her vaccinations, the risk should be minimal. To be safe, you could certainly try and keep her in the areas of your home where your previous puppy never spent time or used the bathroom. But from what you've said here, it seems unlikely that Kiki would get sick - the parvo vaccine is usually very effective, so most cases that I see are in unvaccinated pups.

Hello, parvo is generally a disease of young unvaccinated dogs and older dogs whom are vaccinated very rarely contract the disease. You should clean his environment daily with a dilute bleach solution to reduce the contamination of parvo, especially where Bella used to sleep and places where she may have had diarrhea. Ideally, keep King away from those areas at least until you have cleaned them. If King does contract parvo, which again is highly unlikely, he is most likely to have a very mild form of it due to his vaccinations. Monitor him for any vomiting, diarrhea, or a decreased appetite and have him evaluated by your veterinarian if you do not any of these. Hope this helps and best of luck.
