My dog was near a dog that died of suspected Parvo. Is she safe?

I'm so sorry to hear about your dog. If your other dogs are adults (over 2 years old) and current on their vaccinations, it is very unlikely that they would get parvo - this is almost always a disease of unvaccinated puppies. But, if you have other puppies or young dogs in the house, especially if they are not current on vaccines, then I would be concerned that they may catch it. The virus lives in the environment for years, so I would recommend cleaning everything that your puppy came into contact with using a diluted bleach solution.

Hello. It is very unlikely that a 9-year-old dog can contract Parvo. But there is any number of conditions & diseases that can cause severe gastrointestinal upsets. I can not tell you if this is a fatal situation or not, all I can say is you need to stay in close communication with your veterinarian, reporting any unusual signs, or indications that your pet is not healing or doing well. It sounds like you've done a good job disinfecting your home - if the new pup is finished with her vaccinations, the risk should be minimal. To be safe, you could certainly try and keep her in the areas of your home where your previous puppy never spent time or used the bathroom. But from what you've said here, it seems unlikely that Kiki would get sick - the parvo vaccine is usually very effective, so most cases that I see are in unvaccinated pups.

If Baylee has not been properly vaccinated and followed your vet's recommended vaccination protocol, then it is possible for her to get Parvo. If she is properly vaccinated, then she is safe. The vaccine is very effective at preventing infection.

If your dog has been fully vaccinated against parvo (completed a full puppy series of vaccines) then infection is very unlikely. If it has been years since the kennel had a parvo infected dog inside, it is unlikely the virus is still alive. Hi there. Assuming Sophie has had her full vaccination schedule and appropriate boosters then the likelihood of her becoming ill with parvovirus is very rare. Of course, some animals don’t respond as well to vaccines as others, but that is a rare occurrence. If for some reason she does get sick and you have proof of vaccination given by a veterinarian then most vaccine companies will pay for treatment. Hello. The biggest concern would be Parvo, but this is usually a very easy disease to screen for. Without knowing how old you other dog was, what diagnostics were run & treatments started, I cannot comment on why she died. As for a new puppy, they are all vulnerable to disease until they receive all of their puppy series at 8, 12 & 16 weeks of age. You may want to restrict the new puppy to an area of the yard not generally used previously & limit time outside. Keep the puppy away from any public areas, clean up after everyone defecates & I think all will be OK. I am sorry for your loss but hope the new puppy brings you many years of happiness.
