My dog was exposed to a parvo survivor. Is he at risk of infection?

I would not recommend to get the puppy who did not get Parvo. It’s possible that he may still break with this highly contagious virus. For the puppy that survived Parvo, he will likely be fine. Long term, most dogs experience no organ damage or side effects. This puppy is still shedding the Parvo virus and will continue to shed the virus for 6 months in it’s feces. The virus will live for roughly 1 year in the soil. That means you cannot take this puppy out in public where it may expose other puppies who are not vaccinated for at least 6 months. That also means your yard will be contaminated for at least 1.5 years minimum so you cannot have any dogs over to play who are not fully vaccinated or else they run the risk of contracting the virus. You don’t want to harm any other pets. He also cannot play with any dogs who are not fully vaccinated for 6 months. The vaccine is highly effective and it’s unlikely that a fully vaccinated pet will get sick (but keep in mind nothing is a 100% guarantee). If your dog has been fully vaccinated against parvo (completed a full puppy series of vaccines) then infection is very unlikely. If it has been years since the kennel had a parvo infected dog inside, it is unlikely the virus is still alive. Hello. I think that Stewie has little risk of becoming ill from contact with this puppy. Adult dogs, especially those that have been vaccinated, usually have good immunity against Parvovirus. The fact that his vaccine “expired” 6 weeks ago is not as critical as you may think. It is likely that he still has adequate protection against the virus. I'm so sorry to hear about your dog. If your other dogs are adults (over 2 years old) and current on their vaccinations, it is very unlikely that they would get parvo - this is almost always a disease of unvaccinated puppies. But, if you have other puppies or young dogs in the house, especially if they are not current on vaccines, then I would be concerned that they may catch it. The virus lives in the environment for years, so I would recommend cleaning everything that your puppy came into contact with using a diluted bleach solution.

If Baylee has not been properly vaccinated and followed your vet's recommended vaccination protocol, then it is possible for her to get Parvo. If she is properly vaccinated, then she is safe. The vaccine is very effective at preventing infection.

Yes, there is a danger bringing his dog into your home if your dogs are not fully vaccinated and his isn't either. Parvo is highly contagious, and if your son's dog isn't fully vaccinated, then his dog can contract parvo as well. Should your dogs not be vaccinated, even if your son's dog is, I still would not bring his dog into your home. There is a potential that your son or his dog can bring the virus into your home with them, including on your son's clothes or shoes. It is a deadly disease, and it's best for the health of your dog to not be in contact with a dog that has been exposed to a dog with parvo. Should both your dogs and his dog be fully vaccinated, I would have his dog quarantined for 7-14 days (the incubation period of parvo) away from your dogs before introducing them to be safe. While vaccines are highly effective, there is an extremely small chance that infection can occur despite the vaccines, and it's best to take all precautions for the health of your dogs, especially the elderly one. No need to worry at all! Not only has Oakley had all his puppy shots, but the dog had parvo over a year ago. Dogs are not carriers of parvo, once they recover from it, they cannot infect other dogs.
