Why is my older dog suddenly dizzy and stumbling? Vet needed?

I'm sorry to hear Badger is having issues. There could be multiple causes for the dizzy-like spells you are seeing, including an orthopedic issue, an underlying medical issue, or a neurologic issue. Neurologically older dogs can get something called vestibular disease, which affects the inner ear and controls balance. When affected, this leads to vertigo like symptoms. Vestibular disease can be seen in older dogs with no apparent underlying cause, or can be secondary to an inner ear infection or growth in the inner ear. I would recommend he be evaluated by his regular veterinarian to determine the underlying causes for the issue he is having, have any necessary testing done (X-ray, bloodwork) and start any treatment that he may need. She does need to see a vet as soon as you can as this sounds like a neurological problem. It may be a stroke, an inner ear infection, or vestibular disease. Your vet will examine her and start her on medicine to help with the dizziness and off balance so she can rest. Most regain normal function with time and treatment.

Yes, this sounds like seizure activity. Unfortunately at her age if she is just now starting to have seizures that is not a good thing. Seizures starting at her age are usually indicative of an underlying brain lesion. I would recommend you take her in to your vet for an examination and some bloodwork. The type of symptoms you are describing should be addressed by a veterinarian. Be sure not to leave out the part you mentioned here concerning a familial epileptic connection. Is it possible that Priscilla may have had a seizure and you are now seeing the after effects of the episode?? Either way, the neurologic symptoms, particularly the speed with which they came on, are very concerning and should be addressed at some point today. Depending on the cause of the problem, it has the ability to get worse quickly. I would not delay on having her seen.

If Lily seems completely fine otherwise I think you could monitor her tonight and contact your vet in the morning to see if they would recommend an exam. If she loses balance again, seems disoriented, or vomits is recommend seeing a vet tonight. It’s possible that she had a short seizure or other neurologic problem, or that she has low blood sugar or an electrolyte imbalance.

It sounds like a small stroke, it could be vestibular disease as well, i would recommend taking him for a checkup today, he should be evaluated to make sure his neurological condition is not damaged.

What you are describing sounds like it may be seizure. This can happen at any age from getting into something or having a change in their nervous system or brain. At her age, it is safest to have her checked by a vet to make sure there are metabolic reasons this was started. If it is a seizure then there is medicine they can start to help prevent further ones and control it
