Why is my dog suddenly weak, wobbly, stumbling, and unresponsive?

I'm sorry that happened to your dog! It's always scary to see them disoriented. Based on what you've reported, I suspect she may have experienced a seizure. It sounds like she recovered without complication as they often do. My personal dog has epilepsy so I've seen this many times. I would record the symptoms and date on your calendar. I would consult with your veterinarian and report her symptoms (not an emergency unless she experiences another episode today). Your vet can perform a thorough exam and recommend any other diagnostics to make sure there is nothing obvious that needs treatment. Depending on what they find and if she has more episodes, appropriate treatment can be recommended.

Poor girl. The fact that she is wobbly and running into things, means that this is likely neurological. I would definitely have her seen by your vet right away for a thorough examination and brief neuro exam to see if we can find the underlying cause for this. One common cause for these types of sudden neurological symptoms in older dogs is vestibular disease, which can be caused by an inner ear infection, a brain tumor, or idiopathic (no underlying cause found). Idiopathic vestibular disease is the most common one we see and typically can improve on its own within a few weeks time with supportive care through your vet. It’s possible she had a seizure. If she does not steadily return to normal over the next few hours, it would be best to have her checked by your vet in the morning. Routine screeening bloodwork can help determine if a liver or kidney issue could be the cause of the seizure. Medical treatment for seizures is usually not started unless the pet has multiple seizures in one month, repeated seizures or a grand mal seizure lasting more than several minutes. Seizures generally have a pre-ictal phase where the pet is anxious and may vomit, the ictal phase during which paddling/convulsions are seen, and the post-ictal phase where the pet is disoriented and often wobbly. Hello. OK, this does not sound good. Princess is in distress, either from a massive infection, vestibular disease, stroke or an inflammatory brain lesion. Please have Leilani seen by a vet right away. It sounds like she may be dealing with a neurologic problem, and she is likely suffering. It is difficult to give a prognosis without further diagnostics, as she could also be dealing with weakness from systemic diseases, low blood sugar, trauma, or toxin ingestion. A vet visit is needed immediately to determine the cause of his signs and guide treatment, as the prognosis could worsen drastically without treatment. Hi there and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I am sorry to hear Athena is not feeling well- sounds like there is a lot going on. It is hard to say what exactly the cause is of Athena's symptoms but it sounds like she may have an ear infection which can contribute to loss of balance, however if she has loss of balance, nystagmus (eyes darting back and forth), loss of bladder control and no appetite, there may be something more here at play then just an ear infection. There may be a brain tumor or cancerous process elsewhere in the body that may have metastasized to the brain which may be contributing to Athena's symptoms. I'm sorry to hear that Oscar isn't feeling well. The symptoms you describe are very concerning to me. It may be that he has a neurologic disease, or (especially if he's older) he may a tumor which has started to cause some internal bleeding. Though his gums are pink, this is still possible. Is there any chance he got into something in terms of a possible toxin? If he will get up and walk to you, and he responds to his name each time, and will eat and drink; it is reasonable to wait until morning if you don't have a vet emergency center near you. If he is unable to rise on his own, if he won't respond to his name, if he's vomiting, seems painful, or if he seems to be getting worse at all, please seek an emergency veterinarian.
