My dog fell and seemed confused. Could it be a seizure or heart issue?

Pet's info: Dog | Havanese | Female | spayed | 12 years and 5 months old | 25 lbs

Hi My dog Lily just had an episode where she lost balance in her legs and fell to one side. Once she was on the ground she curled up and looked disoriented. Around 15 seconds later she got back up and acted fine. Is this a seizure?

Yes, this sounds like seizure activity. Unfortunately at her age if she is just now starting to have seizures that is not a good thing. Seizures starting at her age are usually indicative of an underlying brain lesion.

I would recommend you take her in to your vet for an examination and some bloodwork. In the meantime, monitor her closely and if it happens again I would video tape the episode so you can show it to your vet.

Hi, without seeing the event this could be either a seiszure of syncopal episode. A syncopal episode is a collapsing episode where they don't lose consciousness but are temporarily very weak and may be unable to move. The cause of this is usually heart disease. A seizure usually has a post ictal phase where the dog is disoriented and not acting right. Because she was fine after, and given her age, I would be concerned for her heart. She should be taken to a vet for a check up in the morning. Try to do this sooner rather than later. If she has another episode tonight, go to an emergency vet as this can be dangerous. Another rule out is a neurological cause, which originates in the brain. A vet can help you distinguish which she had. Also, if she has another one try to video tape it to show to the vet. This may be due to toxin ingestion or epilepsy, which does occur occasionally in older dogs. Head shaking may be related or unrelated as an ear infection. I'm a little concerned that these symptoms you report may be mild seizure activity. Especially if she does not really respond to you during the event. Circling can also be a symptom of something going on with the head (seizure or otherwise). If this has occurred more than once I would recommend a visit to your vet for a baseline neurologic exam and some blood work to rule out anything wrong with her blood sugar, electrolytes, or organ function. If you can catch an episode on video this can be really helpful so that your vet can determine if this is neurologic in origin. If determined to be neurologic in origin, then there are many things that can cause this, and further testing and/or anti-seizure medication may be needed. Why is my older dog suddenly dizzy and stumbling? Vet needed?

I'm sorry that happened to your dog! It's always scary to see them disoriented. Based on what you've reported, I suspect she may have experienced a seizure. It sounds like she recovered without complication as they often do. My personal dog has epilepsy so I've seen this many times. I would record the symptoms and date on your calendar. I would consult with your veterinarian and report her symptoms (not an emergency unless she experiences another episode today). Your vet can perform a thorough exam and recommend any other diagnostics to make sure there is nothing obvious that needs treatment. Depending on what they find and if she has more episodes, appropriate treatment can be recommended.

Hello. This sounds very suspicious of a seizure. The average age of onset of seizure activity for epileptic dogs is from 2-4 years of age. Since this is a first time occurrence...or the first that you have witnessed....you may have to wait and see if it happens again. It may help your veterinarian if you can video the episode if it happens again. My dog suddenly shook, curled up, and was unresponsive. Seizure?

Poor Chloe! It sounds like she had a seizure or possibly a syncope (fainting) from a heart problem. She should be examined by a vet to determine the cause. Your vet can do an examination, run lab-work, and x-rays, if needed, to diagnose and then determine if any treatment is needed. If another episode happens, try to record so your vet can see exactly what happens during an episode.

My dog is dazed, stumbling, and peeing after waking. Is it seizures?

It's a bit hard to say, but this sounds like seizure activity, especially with the periods of confusion you're describing after the episodes occur. In a 4 year old dog I'd be concerned about epilepsy, although other possibilities such as a poisoning and brain tumors should be considered as well. Roscoe needs to see his vet ASAP in order to find out what is going on, and start treatment. If these are seizures, the longer they go undiagnosed and uncontrolled, the more likely he will have one that he won't come out of. Get him seen ASAP.
