My newly adopted dog has accidents and isn't pooping. Is this normal?

I would not be overly concerned about this just yet. Dogs can hold it for a pretty long period of time. It is not great for them to do so but it should not be harmful at this stage. Are you sure she hasn't gone somewhere in the house? If you are taking her out on a leash, she may not be used to going on a leash - this happens a lot. So you may have to have her off leash. Don't make too much of a big deal when you take her out. Only say whatever word you want to cue her to use the bathroom like "go potty". Do not say or do anything else. Once she goes give her a good treat of something she likes. If you don't have an off leash area then I suggest you do the same as above just on leash instead of off. Try to take her to a spot where other dogs have gone as this usually stimulates them to go. Urination is most important. If she goes 24 hours without urinating you need to get her to a vet. It may be days before she defecates and that is not as concerning. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

It is common for a decrease in appetite and to not be very playful from being scared but generally does. It affect urination at this point. I would not worry about a BM at this point as it may be too soon but he should have at least urinated somewhere. Are you sure he has not gone somewhere inside? The best thing to do is keep him in a kennel or small room tonight to see if he goes in there once left alone overnight.

As long as she is eating, playful and not straining give her more time. If she can urinate in her own she can poop on her own. You can also call the person you got her from to double check what she did with them. Since you are seeing your vet tomorrow she should be fine. Have a good day!

Hi there! It's very common for newly adopted dogs to have housetraining issues. Kimchi is in a brand new place, and you have no idea what kind of training, if any, she may have had in her previous life. I would recommend going "back to basics" with Kimchi and treating her like a new puppy with no previous knowledge of where to potty. Take her out frequently, and reward her with praise and a treat as soon as she pees or poops outside. Inside, you need to supervise her all the time - use a baby gate or other barrier to keep her in the same room with you, if needed. When you can't watch her, she should be confined to a crate or a single room with a hard floor. Once she's gone a full two weeks with no accidents at all, you gradually start to give her a bit more freedom in the house. See our article on housetraining puppies for more information. Hello, and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would not be concerned at this time. Sometimes a sudden change in environment can cause bowel movement irregularities. If Mia still has not had a BM by tomorrow, make sure to mention it to the vet. If she does, it is a good idea to collect in in a plastic bag so that they can use it to check for intestinal parasites, which are common in puppies. I usually recommend that you continue to feed the food she was on from the breeder to avoid digestive upset. Make sure she has access to clean, fresh water, which will help keep stools moist and easy to pass.

I would think that if she was having some urinary issue you would notice some signs such as straining, licking her perineal area, possibly scooting. I would watch her closely and make sure she is not urinating in the house when no one is looking or make sure that where she lays, you don't find a urine soaked area. Good luck with Bella.

Congratulations on the new girl! This is possibly nothing but stress from all the new changes in her life. Stress colitis (diarrhea from stress) is a very real phenomenon and she may not have eaten/been drinking well in the last couple days due to the transition. If she is otherwise bright and normal looking, give it 48 hours. Try a probiotic like purina fortiflora and a bland diet (half plain boiled/canned chicken half plain cooked white rice) for a few days and I expect the diarrhea to improve after 1-3 days. (Then transition back to her regular diet slowly over 3-5 days.) If at ANY time she is lethargic, vomiting, not wanting to eat, or you have other concerns, you need to go to the vet clinic right away to make sure it’s nothing more serious.
