Why won't my newly adopted dog eat, potty, or stop reverse sneezing?

Congratulations on your new addition! I'm glad to hear that Champ is very well-behaved. It's never a big surprise when a new pet refuses to eat or drink well when they're first brought to a new home. This change can be quite stressful and intimidating to them, and can evoke a bit of anxiety, leading to this refusal to eat or drink. First of all, try to give Champ as much space as he wants. You can offer him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and white rice for a few days to try to tempt him to eat, then gradually mix in his regular dog food. When you offer him food, try to do so in a quiet, calm environment where he can eat undisturbed by people or other pets. Initially, he'll probably be more willing to eat and drink when he's alone. My guess is that he's drinking some water when you aren't watching - particularly if he's urinating normally. Try to work on giving Champ a safe space where he can always go if he wants to be alone, such as a crate or a bed in the corner of a quiet room, and respect his boundaries by always leaving him alone if he's in that space. Building up on this safe space can help a dog feel more comfortable and confident in their surroundings, which in turn will likely facilitate normal behaviors, including eating and drinking. If you have had Audrey for more than 48 hrs with these symptoms, then I would be worried that she is ill. Its best to have her evaluated by your vet if that is the case, since just about every illness can cause these similar symptoms. She will need diagnostic testing done to help determine the underlying problem so that we know how best to treat her moving forward. If she has not been in your possession for more than 48 hrs, then she is likely just adjusting to her new home. Give her more time and perhaps even find out what food she was eating before and offer that to her. You can also offer canned food to see if that entices her to eat. Take her on short walks as well to help keep her active and hopefully help form a proper stool. I hope that your fur baby Audrey does well here moving forward. Best wishes and take care!

If she seems fine otherwise with a good activity level, I recommend you try a highly palatable diet such as the Purina Pro Plan shredded blends or potentially consider adding pieces of boiled chicken or dog grade gravy to make her current diet more palatable. This is likely going to work for you. If at some point, she appears to not be doing well, have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment. Good luck!

He could have some allergies or possibly have an upper respiratory infection. You can monitor him for a few days and see if the sneezing resolves. If it continues, he should be examined by a vet to determine the cause. He may need an anti-histamine or antibiotic to treat. As for the sleeping, it may take him some time to adjust to his new home. As long as he seems energetic when you take him out than it is probably nothing to worry about. You could have him examined by a vet if it continues. Poor Boomer! It does sound like he's a bit stressed. You can try hand feeding him his food for a few days until he settles in to see if that helps (especially if he takes it from you), or try to entice him to eat his own food by adding in a little boiled chicken or low-sodium broth to make it tasty. You can then slowly phase out both as he becomes more comfortable. If he continues to refuse to eat, or starts to show any signs of illness, seeking a vet exam to rule out any issues is a good idea. If he doesn't seem to settle down or is very stressed for several weeks, talking with a trainer is another option as well.

Some dogs are not vocal due to their personalities. Others will take time to adjust and get comfortable in their new environment. It can be very stressful and scary for little ones to go to a new home, so it takes some time for their personality to shine. At 3 pounds, his stomach is not big enough to hold a lot of food. He should be feed 3-4 times a day to maintain the blood sugar. Once he is bigger you can decrease it back to twice a day. Stress and anxiety can also affect the appetite. Not every dog goes to the bathroom on that schedule. Take him out after he eats, then every 30 minutes to an hour until he gets good control and the concept of house training. If he is playing and stops to sniff and circle, then he needs to go. If you notice any bloody diarrhea or vomiting or he does not eat at all and seems weak, then i would get him checked right away

Issues with the teeth, gums, or mouth can cause pain while eating. Of course there are other medical conditions that can cause decreased or lack of appetite that will need to be ruled out with her veterinarian. You can try softening the food down with water and heating it up a bit to bring out the flavor and entice her to eat. If she still doesn't want to eat, then please take her in to see her vet as soon as you can.
