Why won't my new 8-week-old puppy eat her food after adoption?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is certainly not that unusual in puppies and really in some adults as well as they adjust to a new environment. If she seems fine otherwise with a good activity level, I recommend you try a highly palatable diet such as the Purina Pro Plan shredded blends or potentially consider adding pieces of boiled chicken or dog grade gravy to make her current diet more palatable. This is likely going to work for you. If at some point, she appears to not be doing well, have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment. Good luck!

Loss of appetite and decreased energy can be observed with many conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have Rocco evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for these possibilities and others depending on the findings on exam. Sometimes puppies can have a slight decrease in appetite when they first come home since it is a big adjustment, however it sounds like you've had her a few days. Given her age and her breed I'd recommend seeing a veterinarian to make sure she doesn't have low blood sugar, parasites, or another medical problem affecting her appetite. If she also seems weak, lethargic or disoriented you should see an emergency veterinarian as soon as possible. She is adorable!

If you just got her on Friday, it may be the move has stressed her out a bit and she needs a few days to adjust. However, there can be other causes such as viral, bacterial, or parasitic infections that may cause decreased appetite potentially. It is good to hear she is having normal bowel movements and is urinating, however. You can try heating up her food a bit to bring out the flavor and try feeding small amounts frequently. If a couple more days go by and she still has not eaten, I would recommend she see her veterinarian just to make sure there is nothing more serious going on. I hope this helps!

Hi and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sometimes eating and drinking behavior can change due to underlying dental disease or another health issue. I would recommend Maggie get checked out with her veterinarian soon. Your veterinarian will do an exam along with a oral exam and may recommend blood work and/or a dental cleaning. If all is normal, then perhaps Maggie may be particular with her food. I would choose a good quality food for her such as Wellness, Taste of the Wild, Solid Gold, Royal Canin, Hill's, Acana, or Orijen just to name a few. Try not to change the food frequently as this may encourage her to be finicky. She will eat when she's hungry enough! But first, I would be sure to have her seen by her vet just to make sure there is nothing else going on that may cause eating/drinking changes. I hope this helps and thanks again for posting!

However, this should subside and should not last very long. I would entice her appetite by adding things like boiled chicken, dog grade gravy, lean meats, among others. HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Miko! Since Miko is so young and hasn't been eating I recommend you have her seen sooner than later. Puppies that young can deteriorate quickly. If she is not up to date on vaccines, parvo is a concern. But it could be other viral or bacterial infections, food intolerance, ate something that isn't agreeing with her, intestinal parasites or a foreign body. Try offering her something yummy like boiled chicken or hamburger with rice or some meat flavored baby foods. If she continues to not eat, starts vomiting or having diarrhea or is lethargic she needs to be seen. i wish you the best of luck and a speedy recovery for Miko
