Why does my mother dog accidentally lay on her puppies and not move?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Doberman Pinscher | Female | unspayed | 90 lbs

I have a 3 year old Doberman Pinscher female she is almost 4 years old, she has had 2 litters of puppies 1 1/2 years apart. When she has welped them she steps on her puppies accidently/lays on them and even if she hears them cry she will not move. Is this normal behavior in this individual breed?or is it just my dog that does this?or is it lack of litter experience? Why does she step and lay on them and does not move? .This is the only reason few puppies have died in her litters, shes a good mom

That is not an uncommon situation and may be observed quite frequently in clinical practice. There is no specific reason for it, but usually less experienced mums do it more often. Close monitoring is always recommended to avoid these situations.
