Why is my new mom dog anxious and licking her puppies too much?

Is the pup nursing well? Does it seem as strong as the others? I would try to keep a close eye and make sure that the pup is thriving. I would also watch closely that Mom doesn’t injure the pup. Hi, so sorry to hear that the puppy is not doing well. If the puppy is cold to the touch try to warm him or her with a blanket and make sure the airway is clear by gently opening the mouth. In some cases, we have to use a bulb syringe to remove saliva or secretions from the airway. Then attempt to get the puppy to nurse. If the puppy fails to show interest in nursing you should purchase a baby bottle and formula (Esbilac) and attempt to feed every 2 hours using. Also, stimulate the puppy to urinate and defecate by gently wiping the anus with a warm wet washcloth. If the puppy fails to show signs of improvement contact your veterinarian.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Lulu! I am not sure if I fully understand Lulu's anxiety. It is strange behavior to only chew on herself when she is eating. Maybe she has more allergies and is itchy than anxious? Being mother in animals is instinctual. Most dogs make very good mothers. Her anxiety isn't a predictor whether she will or will not be. I would watch her very carefully after the puppies are born. If there are signs of aggression towards the puppies then you will have to hand raise them with dog milk replacer in bottles. If she is a bad mother I would have her spayed so she can not have any more puppies after this litter. I hope this helps and I wish you all the best!

Yes, this normal. Nursing causes the release of oxytocin, which in turn causes uterine contractions. Lyla is panting due to the uterine contractions. This can occur for up to two weeks. Keep in mind as well that this can be a sign of a post-partum problem, so make sure her temperature is normal (101-102.5F). If she has a fever, then she will need to see a vet immediately. I’m sorry to hear about Lady. While this could certainly be anxiety, I also find that dogs show this type of “needy” behavior when when are painful or sick- I’ve even met one dog who does this every time her anal glands are full. I’d take Lady in to your vet to make sure she doesn’t have an injury, fever, etc. And if it does seem to be anxiety, your vet can help out with medication for that too. Congratulations on your new baby and I hope Lady is back to her old self soon!

Coco is just being a good mom--I wouldn't worry at this point, as she should calm down about the grooming as the kittens age. If she starts to become aggressive with you or them, you can ask your vet about anti-anxiety medication like Lorazepam, which works well in cats. However, I don't think you need to do anything at this point. Hope that helps!
