My dog had puppies, one is barely moving. Why is mom anxious?

Sometimes the mother will reject puppies that she feels won't make it, and in a large litter with such a small breed dog I would not be surprised if some of the pups just weren't viable. Your best bet in the future is to make sure the puppies are kept well-warmed - a heat lamp is good for this - and also watch the mom closely, especially in the first few days, to make sure that her mothering instincts are taking over and she's not trying to sit on any of the puppies. If you find some of them unresponsive, wrap them in a warm towel and try stimulating them by vigorous rubbing. You can also gently blow into their mouths, and use a bulb syringe to suction any accumulated mucous from the airway.

You are right that mothers often have a sense that one of their offspring is not well and will push them aside. Puppies do tend to sleep long periods, so the lack of noise is not too concerning. It is a big concern when their temperature drops though. Good that you have the heat pad. Also, you should keep him covered or provide a heat lamp. You can also warm up water and put it in some bags. Place the warm bags around the puppy. It is imperative that they get mother's milk at this age. A formulated milk replacer for dogs is good when mom is not available, but is no substitute. You may have to put the puppy on to mom in order to make sure she drinks enough. Puppies have to feed frequently, so you will need to do this every four hours (day and night) until mom stops kicking him away or the puppy is at least 4 weeks old. However, sometimes puppies (especially pure breeds) are born with conditions that they cannot recover from. In nature, it is normal for a mom to lose all but two or three pups. Sometimes they lose the whole litter. I'm not trying to scare you, but just letting you know that it's not your fault if he does not make it. For the best outcome, you should bring mom and the puppies to the vet for an exam. They may be able to find out what is wrong with the puppy and advise treatment and critical care. I'm so sorry to hear about your pup. First step is to warm him up. A Heating pad set on low with the cloth cover on will work. Other types of warm packs are ok too as long as there is a towel/cloth between the heat source and the pup. Keep heating until a rectal temp of 99 is achieved. Meanwhile, rub a small amount of white karo syrup or honey on his gums to help with low blood sugar. Between these two things he will hopefully perk up within 10-20 minutes enough to take the bottle/teat. Then feed as often as he cries. DO NOT try to syringe or force food until you are sure he is swallowing well as this can cause pneumonia if he accidentally inhales a little. Side note: I know it's silly, but be sure that you have poked a hole in the nipple of the bottle (many come with no opening which is weird). Sometimes, despite these efforts, a puppy will not respond and you will need to see the emergency vet for IV bloodsugar and fluids, etc. Even then, we sometimes cannot save them and they do pass. Many times these are the runts of the liver or we suspect there is something else going on (born with a congenital organ problem). Hope this helps and best of luck to you and the baby!

Is the pup nursing well? Does it seem as strong as the others? I would try to keep a close eye and make sure that the pup is thriving. I would also watch closely that Mom doesn’t injure the pup. Some new moms tend to be nervous and overattentive to the puppies, especially if this is Lacey's first litter. Some overzealous bitches will end up injuring the puppies, or lick/clean them so often they don't have adequate time to nurse. This behavior often improves after the first several days. I would recommend having someone monitor Lacey and the puppies at all times if there is any sign that she may be too rough. You could also try a pheromone like Adaptil or a supplement like Zylkene (safe for lactating bitches). If Lacey seems to be panting frequently, having trouble breathing, or shaking you should have her seen by your vet - these signs along with anxiety can be seen with low calcium.

Oh no. Breathing issue in a newborn are considered critical. Take a pediatric bulb syringe and suction out the nose and throat area for any residual liquid. I suspect that your puppy may have gotten fluid in the lungs. There could be a congenital defect (i.e. cleft palate) that could have caused this or it could have been accidentally done by aggressive feeding from the mother where milk went down the trachea instead of the esophagus. It is critical to take puppy to your ER vet if he continues to having difficulty breathing after you suction everything out well. He may need oxygen support (if tongue is blue or not oxygenating well) and antibiotics if he is found to have aspiration pneumonia. Constipation is also a concern but doesn't take precedence over the breathing problems. Please get puppy help asap because he is considered to be in critical condition and in need of medical assistance.

I would allow some freedom to Charlotte outside of her whelping box. She may be feeling anxious and need to move around or use the bathroom. It is ok for her to be away from the puppies for short periods of time. Watch the the pups closely and make sure she is still allowing them to nurse. If she is not, she may be painful from a mammary gland infection or she may just be a disinterested mother. If you find that she is not allowing the pups to nurse at all then you will need to bottle feed them every 2-3 hours with puppy milk replacer. I hope this helps.
