My dog just had puppies. Why is she accidentally stepping on them?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | unspayed

My dog just had her first litter of 8. So far she’s been doing great with them, no sign of neglect or aggression but she seems somewhat careless and when she lies down with her puppies she’ll almost sit on a few or step on them. What should I do to prevent her from accidentally harming her pups?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is normal behavior for dogs. When there is that many puppies it’s hard to avoid them all. It will be ok, mama will move the puppies if needed. Congrats and kisses to Kimber and her pups!
