My dog just had a puppy. What care do the new mom and puppy need?

Congrats on the puppies! Usually the bitch will do all of the work. Just supervise and make sure she is allowing all of them to nurse and she isn't sitting on any of them. If she isn't nursing them then you will need to buy some dog formula (KMR) and bottle/syringe feed them every 3 hours and use warm water and a cloth to gently rub their genitals to help stimulate them to pee and poop (this mimicks the bitch licking them). Feed a high quality canned puppy food, she needs the energy and water 2. Watch for any face rubbing, twitching, seizures- these are signs of low calcium and this is a life-threatening condition, if any of this occurs get her to a vet right away. 3. Make sure the puppies are all suckling, and make sure Lila is licking them and cleaning them up. 4. Keep their enclosure clean and dry 5. Try to handle the puppies as little as possible and let Lila do her thing, instincts should take over 6. Call your vet about getting a dewormer for Lila. Also discuss her vaccine status 7. Keep any other dogs away, the puppies are at risk of getting viruses and infections. 8. You will need to have the puppies dewormed starting at 2 weeks of age, so make an appointment for then with your vet. 9. Weigh the puppies twice a day on a small gram scale. Great questions! The bitch will need the routine vaccines which include the DHPPi combination (distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, parainfluenza) as well as rabies. She should be dewormed now and again in two weeks to kill any worms that may be present in her GI tract. After that, she should be dewormed every three months. I would recommend a health check with the vet for her as well before breeding. She will also need flea treatment and heartworm treatment. The puppies can start being dewormed as young as two weeks, and should be dewormed every two weeks thereafter until three months of age. They should then be dewormed every month until six months of age, and after three months after that for the rest of their lives. As for vaccines, they can get their first DHPPi combination shot at 6-8 weeks of age, and then will need two series of boosters four weeks apart (10-12 weeks of age and 14-16 weeks of age). It's very important to make sure the bitch is up to date on her flea treatment because newborn puppies cannot have any flea treatments until they are at least 6-7 weeks of age. So, you will want tonfeed it puppy replacement milk from pet store via a bottle every 2 hours, stimulate to urinate and defecate after each feeding byntunning the areas w warm wer paper towel or cloth. Set your alarm every 2 houts overnight too. You will want to keep puppy warm at approx 80 degrees in room as well as.plenty of blankets. You will want to keep it just at home until fully vaccinated. You will begin vaccines at 6 to 8 weeks old. It will get a vaccine then and every 3 to 4 weeks until 16 to 18 weeks old. You can start to introduce dry food about 4 to 5 weeks old. Good luck. I recommend to have Ginny examined by the veterinarian and potentially have an x-ray to make sure there are not other puppies. Goldens generally have more puppies but litters of one can occur. Retained puppies can be fatal. Ginny needs to eat a high quality puppy food (but not large breed, just normal puppy food). Hello, congratulations on your new puppies. Pregnant bitches and those who have just birthed puppies will have a substantially higher calorie demand. Most of the time, we even recommend switching mothers to puppy food (richer in calories) to keep up with there caloric demand. Alternatively, at four weeks you may wean the puppies off from nursing an onto wet/canned puppy food so that mom stops producing milk and her caloric demand returns to normal. You should not administer any medications to a nursing mother unless prescribed by your vet. Ensure she is fed a good quality, mother and puppy food for the next 6-8weeks and deworm mother and puppies at2, 4 and 6weeks of age
