Puppy breeding: What vaccines and deworming do mom and pups need?

Deworming puppies is recommended with pyrantel at 2, 4 and 6 weeks. This can be purchased at any pet store. Vaccines are started at 6 weeks that incude distemper and parvo. Bordetella is not started to 8 weeks and is optional

Things to think about are if Virguie's breed has any trouble giving birth naturally so you can be financially prepared for a surgical C-section. Record all breeding dates accurately. Discuss measuring Progesterone levels with your Vet to time breeding. Look in to whelping boxes and watch videos on whelping so you can help during birth with removing the placentas from the puppies faces and tying umbilical chords. Purchase a bulb syringe to remove mucous from the puppies noses. Virguie should be fed puppy food while pregnant and while nursing. At day 50 pregnant have your Vet take an X-ray of her bally to estimate the number of puppies to expect. Start measuring Virguie's rectal temperature daily around day 58 pregnant to watch for a temperature drop that indicates the start of labor. Always keep your Vet prepared so they can assist you if you have problems. Be prepared to financially deworm and vaccinate the puppies when they need it and to take care of any unexpected illnesses in the mother and with the puppies. I hope this helps!

Hi there! Since Mocha is six weeks old, he should go ahead and start his vaccinations now. He will need a DAPP vaccine (for distemper, adenovirus, parvo, and parainfluenza) now - this vaccine will also need to be boostered every 3 weeks until he is 16 weeks or older. He will also need a rabies vaccine anytime after 12 weeks of age. Depending on his lifestyle and what diseases are prevalent in your area, he may also need to be vaccinated against Bordetelle (kennel cough), leptospirosis, and/or Lyme disease. Your veterinarian can discuss the risks of these illnesses in your area and help you make this decision. And yes, he should also be dewormed. You can use a broad-spectrum dewormer like Strongid or Panacur from the pet store, or get a prescription dewormer from your vet's office if you prefer.

I would recommend deworming all the puppies. I would not start vaccinating them for another 2 weeks if they are only 1 1/2 months old. They need their DAPP vaccinations every 3-4 weeks until 16 weeks of age. They need rabies vaccinations at 16 weeks of age. Depending on your location if youhave Lepto in the area then I would start the Leptospirosis vaccination at 12 weeks of age. First, have her examined by your veterinarian. He or she can administer or dispense a dewormer. It will likely need to be repeated in 2 and 4 weeks. Afterwards, start her on a monthly preventative for heartworm and intestinal parasites. A topical or oral flea and tick preventative can also be started. Discuss with the vet what Cherry's lifestyle will be. This will determine which vaccines she will get. Core vaccines include distemper/parvo combination and Rabies vaccines. She will need 3-4 distemper/parvo vaccine every 4 weeks. The rabies vaccine she can get now. It will be repeated next year, then every 3 years. Lifestyle vaccines include Lyme disease, leptospirosis, canine flu and bordatella (kennel cough). These are given based on her risk of exposure. You can discuss their use with your veterinarian. She can be spayed at about 6 months of age.

Rabies cannot be given this young. You need to check with your vet as to what is required in your area - most rabies vaccines can only be given between 12 and 16 weeks of age. It depends on which manufacturer's vaccine you have. It is not recommended to give vaccinations if the dog does not have a normal body temperature. A temperature of 103.8F (39.9C) is a fever. That is not a "slight" fever. You can give the mother the rabies vaccination at any time, even while pregnant, because it is a "killed" vaccination.
