My dog just had puppies. When should I take mom and pups to the vet?

The best time to take the puppies and their mother to the vet would be at 6 weeks when they will get a puppy exam checking for birth defects, overall health, get dewormed, and receive their first vaccination against parvo virus.

She will need to be fed puppy milk replacer, which can be purchased from most pet stores. She may also need more hope when it comes to potty training, as she won't learn the normal habits from her mother. It is usually recommended to have a veterinarian examine your new puppy within approximately 10 days of your purchase or adoption, in order to rule out any serious illnesses or genetic disorders. Your puppy will also need to be vaccinated against potentially deadly viruses, such as distemper and parvovirus. As for the rabies vaccine, it is most frequently administered between 14-16 weeks of age. Your veterinarian will routinely request to evaluate a fecal sample of your puppy, to check if there are intestinal parasites present and administer deworming medication if necessary. Additionally, there are several other topics you may wish to discuss with your veterinarian, such as proper nutrition, the right time to spay or neuter your puppy, and certain training tactics. Hello. 8 puppies is a pretty good litter. If Mom seems content caring for her newborns, then I would not be too concerned. It is never a bad idea to have everyone checked in the next couple of days, but there is no hurry to do so as long as puppies are nursing & Louie is eating well. I should mention that with this many puppies, she should be on a puppy food for the extra calories, but no other supplements unless your vet recommends them. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I’ve seen it take up to a week for a new Mom to accept the puppies. Just calmly encourage her to lay with them. You can take a warm soft cloth after the feedings and stimulate them to urinate and defecate. And gently wipe them down two times per day until she starts doing it. If she never accepts the puppies I wouldn’t breed her again. I hope this helps! Good luck!

Just make an appointment to have Nala seen by a vet and be sure to bring her puppies with you. The puppies cannot be left alone. The vet can do a physical an exam and x-rays to make sure she has delivered all the puppies. If you can, I would have her seen tomorrow.

Hello. As long as Lola is eating & drinking fairly well, nursing the puppies & seeming to be contented, she should be well. If you have not wormed her in the past few months, I would definitely take a stool sample to your veterinarian now to make sure she will not be passing any parasites to her puppies. Because some parasites are inevitable in puppies, & based on what & if your vet sees anything in the stool, you will need to start administering a wormer to the puppies starting at 2 weeks of age. At the very least, she will likely need to be dewormed. Vaccines can start around 6 weeks of age and will continue every 4 weeks until about 16 weeks of age. Discuss monthly parasite prevention with your vet to protect against worms, fleas, ticks and heartworm. Feed a good quality puppy food. Look for brands such as Canidae, Acana or Merrick. You can feed according tot the directions on the bag, just know that each puppy is different and you may need to adjust the amount if Coqueta is gaining too much weight or not enough weight. Avoid store or discount brands as these may contain low quality ingredients and more fillers. Puppies typically need to go about about 20-30 minutes after eating, sleeping or playing. Expect accidents, they are going to happen. Since dogs thrive on routine, start a consistent schedule for potty breaks; first thing in the morning, midday, evening and before bedtime to begin with. Choose one spot in the yard and use it for bathroom training. She can have a short walk or playtime after she does her business. Praise and reward her each time.
