My male dog is panting and won't leave my female dog in heat. Why?

I can understand being worried about your male dog, but this is normal. He wants to mate with Bailey, and the hormones are effecting him and causing him to pant. This can go on for days, and sometimes males can will stop eating and can injury themselves trying to get to the female so they can mate. If you do not want puppies, the only way to stop this behavior is to move either Bailey or your male dog out of the house. Preferably the male dog so you can keep Bailey isolated to prevent her from mating. Have him go stay at a friend's house while she is in heat (this lasts three to four weeks). I would also make an appointment with the vet to have him neutered, and I would get Bailey spayed after she is out of heat. Otherwise, you will have to deal with this every time she is in heat. Since he is unneutered he may be picking up on her scent even if she is spayed, it's also a way to show dominance over other dogs. If you don't plan to breed him I suggest getting him neutered. This will help the behavior lessen over time and will also prevent some potential health problems as well as reduce the urge to roam and possibly get injured if he escapes looking for a female in heat. You can try getting him obedience training so he will be better behaved and more likely to listen when you try to separate them.

Yes, this is absolutely normal for an entire male. I would try to keep them separate, but if they are in the same building they will sense each other. The advice would change according to wether you would like to breed from the female dog and you are happy about having puppies or not. Unfortunately you cannot unless you have him neutered. Because she is in heat, he wants to mate with her, and even if he mates with her again, he will continue this behavior as long as she is in heat. My advice is to have him neutered after her heat ends. If you cannot stand this noise, it may be best to have him stay at a friend's house until her heat is over. Best of luck.

It can take many weeks to even months for the hormones that are created by the ovaries to stop circulating within the blood stream. But then, some boy dogs are just obnoxious sniffers. Neutering the male may help with this behavior.

If you are unable to have one or both of the dogs spayed/neutered then you will have to be diligent about keeping them separated while the female is in heat. I would recommend keeping the female in the house and the male outside because if you leave the female outside there is a chance another male dog could mate her. I hope this helps. This is not due to stress it is likely due to the hormones she is emitting and what Anakin is picking up on. Having her spayed should help with this problem but for now I would keep them separate if possible. I hope this helps!
