My male dog keeps sniffing my spayed female. Is she still in heat?

Since he is unneutered he may be picking up on her scent even if she is spayed, it's also a way to show dominance over other dogs. If you don't plan to breed him I suggest getting him neutered. This will help the behavior lessen over time and will also prevent some potential health problems as well as reduce the urge to roam and possibly get injured if he escapes looking for a female in heat. You can try getting him obedience training so he will be better behaved and more likely to listen when you try to separate them.

Neutered males can display erections and ejaculate just like intact males. They may mount in a display of dominance or can still mount to breed in the presence of an intact and receptive female. Correct the behavior immediately (even though no litters will come of it) and distract or separate him completely from the female until she is no longer in heat. Consider having your female spayed in the near future.

Hello. He is just being a male dog. Even after neutering, some males may still try to mount females, but in his case, he is still strongly attracted to your spayed female. If you do not plan on neutering the male, keep an eye on the male as the female can get annoyed at him & you may have a fight on your hands. If your male is still quite young, he may mature out of this behavior as his instincts are very strong right now. Just keep an eye on him. It is highly unlikely this is a true heat unless the first one was very short (3-5days; often referred to as a split heat). I would be concerned she may have an infection which the male is confused by. A full vet check and possibly a sample of the fluid being passed to be examined under a microscope would be recommended in order to determine exactly what is going on and to treat appropriately

Most dogs are interested in smelling other dogs' urine - intact males are often especially interested, even if the other dog is spayed or neutered. They get lots of information about other dogs from sniffing their urine, so it's very normal social behavior for them - even if we find it a bit gross :)

It's probably because Zeus wants to mate with her that he won't leave her side. Male dogs can sense when a dog is in heat, and they will be attracted to the female and stay by them so they can mate with them every chance they get. If you don't want them to have puppies, I would keep them separated completely until her heat is over, which usually lasts around three weeks. You can get him neutered as well so that puppies will not happen, but he would still have to be kept separate from her for at least three to four weeks post surgery. This is because he would still be able to impregnate her, he will not be sterile fully until after those weeks have passed. I hope this helps!

Though he is unable to impregnate the female, he can still be responsive to the hormones she is emitting.
