My male dog keeps sniffing my spayed female. Is she still in heat?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | unneutered | 3 years and 9 months old | 8 lbs

I have a 3 year old male not fixed and a almost year old female fixed 6 weeks ago.. this last week the male keeps kicking and sniffing her butt hole like every time she moves.. i am wondering if its something to do with the heat smell if she smells like it. Or sense i had to change her food 2 weeks ago to a different kind but same brand..

It can take many weeks to even months for the hormones that are created by the ovaries to stop circulating within the blood stream. But then, some boy dogs are just obnoxious sniffers. Neutering the male may help with this behavior.

This could be a completely normal situation, as it can take up to a couple of months for females and males to ''get rid'' of the sexual hormones so sexually related behaviors can persist during that time.
