My male dog is going crazy for a female in heat. How to calm him?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Is there anyone that can take him or the female for you for the next 2-3 weeks? Otherwise the only strong enough medication that would work would have to obtained from your Vet. Drugs like Trazadone, acepromazine, Xanax, etc are prescription only. I would doubt that an over the counter medication will control this for you. I would contact your Vet and see if they will prescribe something over the phone but they may require an exam first. Unfortunately if he is acting like this due to a female being in heat then the only way to stop this is by neutering him. If this is always occurring I would recommend a trainer coming to your home to evaluate him but my concern is that it is from a female being in heat. Heat cycles can change a pet's behavior. You can try over the counter calming formulas for dogs but many pets do not respond to them. Your veterinarian also carries sedatives that may help. Heavy exercise for both pets tends to help with undesirable behavior and keeping them separated until this passes. Lastly, unless you plan on breeding Frehley, you may consider getting her spayed so that she doesn't have these hormonal changes. Best of luck and please feel free to post any additional questions.

If you are unable to have one or both of the dogs spayed/neutered then you will have to be diligent about keeping them separated while the female is in heat. I would recommend keeping the female in the house and the male outside because if you leave the female outside there is a chance another male dog could mate her. I hope this helps. You can try the calming treats but they may not help much. Vigorous activity every day like running or playing fetch will likely be most beneficial for him. Spaying and neutering provide health benefits for both sexes and I recommend to have both pets fixed. Henry can be neutered at any point but he will still have sperm in the reporoductive tract for about a month so he can still impregnate a female in heat. Bailey should be spayed 2-3 months after the last day of her heat cycle. She will come into heat about every 6 months. Best of luck and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Unfortunately you cannot unless you have him neutered. Because she is in heat, he wants to mate with her, and even if he mates with her again, he will continue this behavior as long as she is in heat. My advice is to have him neutered after her heat ends. If you cannot stand this noise, it may be best to have him stay at a friend's house until her heat is over. Best of luck.
