Why is my unneutered dog suddenly whining and howling at the door?

Are any other behaviors abnormal? Is he acting painful or sick? Maybe take him for a walk and see how he does away from the female. Unfortunately if he is acting like this due to a female being in heat then the only way to stop this is by neutering him. If this is always occurring I would recommend a trainer coming to your home to evaluate him but my concern is that it is from a female being in heat. If your dog is otherwise acting normally (eating, drinking, peeing, pooping) and not coughing, sneezing, having vomiting or diarrhea then yes, he could be smelling females in heat. If you are not planning on breeding him it is suggest you have him neutered. Many dogs run away in search of females and they can be difficult to manage. Chico is whining because he wants to mate with the female in heat. You can remove the female in heat from your home until she is out of heat (have her stay with a friend), or have him stay somewhere else until she is out of heat. The way to stop this permanently is to have him neutered and your female dog spayed.

Your dog is not neutered and may be looking for females. You should not let your dog stray with stray dogs as he may be picking up disease such as mange, distemper or rabies (especially if he is not up to date on his vaccines). If you are worried about Tiger being ill you should take him to your pet doctor for a wellness exam.

I doubt that you being gone is causing the problem. He is now sexually mature and he probably is looking out for and smelling females in heat. You did not provide her age or tell us whether or not she is spayed. If she is not spayed she may be whining due to hormonal reasons. If this is a new behavior I suggest you take her to the vet for an exam to rule out any underlying medical reasons for this change in behavior.
