Is Loxicom safe for my senior dog with kidney disease and arthritis?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Why was the Loxicom prescribed in the first place? It's a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory used for pain. Most dogs who give birth naturally and even with C-sections are not prescribed pain medications. In the US the FDA has not approved for use in lactating or pregnant animals. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatorys are excreted in the milk. I would suggest not using it until you speak with your Vet. I hope this helps and good luck!

No, please do not increase the dose without consulting with your veterinarian first.All NSAIDs carry a risk to cause kidney damage or liver damage. Ask your vet whether he recommends a muscle relaxant in addition to the Loxicam. This may be safer than increasing the Loxicam dosage.

Hello, Lola is indeed at higher risk for adverse reactions even after a single dose of meloxicam, however your veterinarian is likely not too concerned with the severity of her kidney disease. Therefore, the side effects of meloxicam to her kidneys would be dependent on how severe her kidney disease is. I would recommend monitoring her kidney values for the next five days as Meloxicam has a long half-life and can take up to 5 days to remove completely from the body. This could be done with daily blood checks. Also know that of all the NSAIDs, Meloxicam has the widest safety margin in the phase of kidney disease. Look for any signs of increased drinking, decreased urinations, lethargy, painful abdomen, vomiting, or a decreased appetite and have her evaluated immediately if you note any. I do not recommend using paracetamol without a veterinary evaluation. There are other arthritis supplements that you can start which would not hurt if this happens to not be due to arthritis and if it is, they can help a good amount. There are several joint supplements out there such as Cosequin and Dasuquin, among others. I would encourage you to start with that and if no improvement is observed, Rodger should be evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a great day! Hi Annette! Managing arthritis can be tricky since Joe's kidneys did not seem to tolerate some of the more traditional non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) like Metacam. I'm glad to hear that Joe is taking a glucosamine and chondroitin supplement, like YuMOVE, as this can protect his joint cartilage against further damage. Make sure that you are keeping him at a healthy body weight, as overweight dogs have more stress placed on their joints. Other strategies for managing arthritis include talking to your vet about a trial with Adequan injections for further cartilage protection or new classes of NSAIDs (such as Galliprant) that are much more sparing of the liver and kidneys. Acupuncture and water therapy can also be beneficial for some dogs with arthritis. I hope this helps!

Hello, yes you can very safely start using the Adequan for Stella's arthritis. I would very much prefer that you speak with Stella's vet before using the Prexicox. If you were my client, I would either recommend increasing the gabapentin ( if appropriate ) or using the newest NSAID called Galliprant. This newer medication is much gentler on the liver than anything we have ever had for managing arthritis in dogs. If this is not an option, then I would recommend using a liver neutraceutical like Denamarin to protect the liver as much as possible while on the Previcox.
