My senior dog limps, can I give him pain meds like paracetamol?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | unneutered | 10 years and 5 months old | 92 lbs

I have a 10 year old american staffy who weighs aprox,40kg he is a healthy dog who walks 4 k each day no worries, He apeears to have abit of artheritus in rear legs, and limps aroung before and after walk. especially when hes cold. i was wondering if i could give him some paracetamol or something similar. thankyou for a reply.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Arthritis can happen in older dogs as you know. However, this is not the only condition that can cause lameness like that. I do not recommend using paracetamol without a veterinary evaluation. There are other arthritis supplements that you can start which would not hurt if this happens to not be due to arthritis and if it is, they can help a good amount. There are several joint supplements out there such as Cosequin and Dasuquin, among others. I would encourage you to start with that and if no improvement is observed, Rodger should be evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a great day! My older dog is limping. Is it safe to give him Tylenol for pain?

No, Tylenol is never safe to give to dogs. It contains acetaminophen which is toxic to dogs. Please do not give this to Deuce. I would have him seen by a vet if he's limping. The vet can diagnose what is causing the pain and limping, and can prescribe safe pain medication for him. I hope this helps!

There are many to choose from, and they can literally give an aging pet a new lease on life. I have literally seen crippled dogs that owners wanted to euthanize become happy, active pets. The first thing to do is see your veterinarian for a thorough exam, blood work & possible x-rays & hopefully start your pet on a medication to ease her pain. You should keep Steve rested, with limited exercise on a leash, no running, jumping or going up or down the stairs. My old dog limps, stiff. Is it arthritis? What joint supplements help?

Arthritis is definitely a possibility. You could start him on a joint supplement, like Dasuquin and see if that helps. Your vet could also take an x-ray to evaluate for arthritis and then start him on a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory, like Deramaxx, Previcox, Rimadyl, etc. NSAIDs help relieve the discomfort associated with arthritis.

My senior dog has back pain and trouble walking. What can I do?

Hello. I agree, surgery at this age would not be ideal given her age. You do not indicate what meds she is already on, but she should be receiving an NSAID such as meloxicam, carprofen, or any one of several excellent drugs in this classification. I would also have her on gabapentin, possibly tramadol, & maybe even Adequan injections, just in case some of her joints are painful. An alternative for the NSAIDs would be steroids as they are very good at reducing inflammation, but that does put her at some risk for side effects.
