Is Adequan safe for my dog with arthritis on meds and liver concerns?

You really need to consult with your veterinarian about the use of Adequan and the best dose for your dog. If his arthritis is severe than he may need to be given Novox on a daily basis. If you are concerned about possible side effects, try to find the lowest daily dose that still provides relief for him. You could also talk to your vet about adding in Tramadol and/or Gabapentin for more pain relief.

Hello. There are many wonderful medication availably to make Sassy much more comfortable in her older years. You can start with a good glucosamine/chondroitin sulfate supplement ( I like Dasuquin by Nutramax ). Then, you can visit with your vet about some of the amazing medications we have to keep our elderly pets so much more comfortable, like NSAIDS ( Previcox, Rimadyl, Deramax, Meloxicam, Galliprant ) to which we can add additional medications such as Gabapentin, if necessary. In addition, adding Adequan injections may actually lower the amount of medications that Sassy might need to keep her comfortable. I have a pit bull myself with very bad arthritis so I know where you are coming from. I routinely prescribe Adequan to clients to inject at home, as they are very simple subcutaneous injections. This is me, not every veterinarian will be comfortable doing this but many are particularly after you tell them you are medical professionals. I would also like to suggest the following with respect to therapies. You may want to try switching to a different NSAID. Sometimes switching makes all the difference after a while. I would also consider adding amantadine to his therapy. I use all three you described plus amantadine for my boy. He is 14 and going strong. You can also try laser therapy, acupuncture, and therapeutic massage as more holistic techniques to help him out. Hope this helps. Best of luck!

Hi Annette! Managing arthritis can be tricky since Joe's kidneys did not seem to tolerate some of the more traditional non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) like Metacam. I'm glad to hear that Joe is taking a glucosamine and chondroitin supplement, like YuMOVE, as this can protect his joint cartilage against further damage. Make sure that you are keeping him at a healthy body weight, as overweight dogs have more stress placed on their joints. Other strategies for managing arthritis include talking to your vet about a trial with Adequan injections for further cartilage protection or new classes of NSAIDs (such as Galliprant) that are much more sparing of the liver and kidneys. Acupuncture and water therapy can also be beneficial for some dogs with arthritis. I hope this helps!

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. Before beginning steroids, I typically start joint supplementation and conservative management before resorting to steroids. Below are the things I currently recommend to combat the pain from arthritis: 1. Dasuquin for large dogs 2. Adequan injections 3. Cold laser therapy 4. Omega 3 fish oil 5. Pain relievers such as amantadine, gabapentin, methadone, and tramadol. If you really want to invest more money into arthritis management PRP injections can help quite a bit. I hope this helps! Medically, in addition to an anti-Inflammatory like previcox there are additional pain medications she could be started on. Adjunctively to medications, laser treatments, hydrotherapy (underwater treadmill), and acupuncture are all options you could look into to help her as well. Good luck!
