Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If Brino has kidney disease, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications. like Loxiom should be avoided. Even half a dose of Loxiom can have detrimental effect on kidneys if used chronically. So, the answer is absolutely yes, Brino should be weaned off Loxiom and paracetamol or other pain killers (tramadol, gabapentin, amantadine etc) should be used instead.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Why was the Loxicom prescribed in the first place? It's a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory used for pain. Most dogs who give birth naturally and even with C-sections are not prescribed pain medications. In the US the FDA has not approved for use in lactating or pregnant animals. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatorys are excreted in the milk. I would suggest not using it until you speak with your Vet. I hope this helps and good luck!

I'm so sorry to hear about Lusso. If she has a sensitive stomach, then I would try to give the Loxicam with a little food. Even a small amount of a treat or a bit of bread might be enough. If she generally does not have a problem with a sensitive stomach and Loxicam has never bothered her before, then you might be able to get away with giving it on an empty stomach, but I always recommend trying to get something into them around the same time as the medication to prevent other problems. If there is a particular time of day that she tends to eat better than others, you may also consider changing the time of day that you give the Loxicam, so it can be with some food. Good luck! Unfortunately, by law it is illegal for the experts at Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to recommend a dose increase in a prescription drug without seeing the animal in person first. That's because doing so requires a veterinary client patient relationship which cannot be achieved via an internet forum. In addition, the experts cannot say for certain if a specific drug is safe for Zeke. You need to give his vet a call to see if you can increase the medication safely, or if the vet wants to try a different pain medicine for him. Best of luck.

I would still have Rover checked out by a vet to be safe. Overdoses of Loxicom can cause acute kidney failure, and that will take a couple of days for it to show symptoms. It's best to have his kidney function checked now with bloodworm and again in a few days to make sure they are working well. I'd bring him into a vet now. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

Hello, Lola is indeed at higher risk for adverse reactions even after a single dose of meloxicam, however your veterinarian is likely not too concerned with the severity of her kidney disease. Therefore, the side effects of meloxicam to her kidneys would be dependent on how severe her kidney disease is. I would recommend monitoring her kidney values for the next five days as Meloxicam has a long half-life and can take up to 5 days to remove completely from the body. This could be done with daily blood checks. Also know that of all the NSAIDs, Meloxicam has the widest safety margin in the phase of kidney disease. Look for any signs of increased drinking, decreased urinations, lethargy, painful abdomen, vomiting, or a decreased appetite and have her evaluated immediately if you note any.
