How to lower my dog's high urine pH and encourage more water intake?

The best and most effective treatment to adjust a cat’s urine pH is to start a special prescription diet. Royal Canin, science diet and Purina all make prescription diets with additives to make the urine more acidic. This will also help to prevent urinary tract infections. These diets can be purchased in many pet stores and online as well but they do require the OK from your veterinarian. The diets will begin to take affect within two weeks and it is recommended to retest the urine one month after starting the new diet. I hope this helps.

There are various reasons for a dog's urine to become alkaline (pH greater than If the urine has been retained in the bladder for too long, it becomes stale. Also, if the urine has been standing too long, ie was not fresh. Contamination with detergent from a collecting bottle that was not rinsed well. Contaminated with ammonia Conditions that can cause alkaline urine: Urinary tract infection with urease-positive bacteria - most common cause (likely not in your case) Persistent vomiting - due to loss of gastric acid. (is your dog vomiting a lot?) Respiratory alkalosis and some other conditions which are rare. If your dog is taking medications, it can cause alkaline urine: e.g. acetazolamide, thiazide diuretics, potassium citrate, sodium acetate, sodium bicarbonate, sodium lactate And finally, Special diets formulated to produce an alkaline urine eg Hill's Precription Diet Canine u/d Alkaline urine can cause kidney and bladder stones. I suggest you have your vet check the pH of your dogs urine again, this time with fresh urine won shortly before testing.

While a urine pH of 5 is considered low, I don't know that you need to make a diet change unless Rylee has a history of lower urinary disease. The urine pH can also vary greatly throughout the day and it may be that her urine is at 5 for only a short period of time. If a prescription diet has been recommended for urinary disease then unfortunately there is not a comparable over the counter diet available right now. If you are looking for a food to encourage weight loss you may want to try to find a food that is lower in calories, or if Rylee is doing well on her current diet you may need to simply cut back on the food offered (and be sure to also cut back or eliminate treats and chews which can be a hidden source of calories). I typically recommend foods by Hill's, Purina, and Royal Canin since they have veterinary nutritionists on staff and perform feeding trials. They also tend to have more quality control measures in place compared to smaller pet food companies. Hill's Perfect Weight food has 270 kCal per cup compared to Taste of the Wild's 364 kCal per cup.

The one we commonly prescribe is Royal Canin SO diet, but there are several others available as well. Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I agree, that is some very dark urine which indicates he must not be drinking enough. You need to increase his water intake. The best way to do that is to add some chicken or beef broth to his food; use the low sodium kind. The added salt (even in the low sodium variety) should encourage him to drink more. If this dark urine continues for more than a few days you should take him to your vet for an exam and urine test.

Obviously, antibiotics are the way to fix that problem. If you’ve been to the vet and there was not bacteria in the urine- just a change in pH, then you can consider a urinary supplement like UT Strength which can help acidify urine. It may be more acidic or alkaline depending on what she has eaten. Be sure she is eating a high quality dog food and cut out all other foods/treats to see if the issue resolves. If you are worried you should take her to the vet for a urine test.
