My 50lb dog ate ibuprofen. Is it toxic? Should I worry or call vet?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 3 years old | 50 lbs

Hello. My healthy 50 pound dog found one ibuprofen tablet on the floor and ate it. I know this can be toxic for some dogs at some doses, I wanted to make sure there is nothing I need to do.

Hello. You do not say what strength the ibuprofen was, but a 50 pound dog can take about 225 mg every 12-24 hours. Toxicity may be seen if your dog ingested around 568 mg. If the tablet was 400 mg or less, Zeke will be fine, but if this was a 600mg tablet or more, you should contact your veterinarian. Thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
