My 50lb dog ate ibuprofen. Is it toxic? Should I worry or call vet?

The low end of the toxic dose range is 50mg/kg, which is about 1500mg. He should be fine but if you begin to notice signs of vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy or inappetance then I would recommend having a veterinarian take a look at him so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. Hi there. We can see serious GI side effects, including stomach ulcers and internal bleeding, at ibuprofen doses over 50 mg/kg. If Dubs is 35 pounds and may have ingested 1200 mg of ibuprofen, this would be about 75 mg/kg - so yes, he would be at risk of developing some serious problems. I would recommend taking him to the vet today for an exam. The veterinarian may recommend checking some lab work to see if there is any evidence of bleeding in his stomach, and will probably prescribe medication to help protect his stomach lining for the next few days until the ibuprofen is out of his system.

While this would be within the therapeutic index and it is supposed to be safe, this medication is not commonly used for pain control in dogs as it is not well-studied. Hello. Ingesting ibuprofen over 25 mg/kg can cause significant gastrointestinal signs. Sable ingested the equivalent of 33mg/kg, so she could have some issues. See hoe she is in the morning, & try to have her seen. She may just be placed on a stomach protectant for a few days just to make sure she stays well. 1200mg is a seriously toxic amount. I would recommend that you call ASPCA's poison control number. That number is 888-426-4435. There is a $65 charge, but they will be able to best advise you. Please have the label available so you can let them know the amount of medication listed, and what any other potentially concerning ingredients were.  If you meant "one 200mg" tablet, then this is on;ly a small amount over a safe dose for a 22kg dog, however I would definitely monitor Coco for the signs described here and if any of those signs appear, take her to a veterinarian for an exam. https://www.petcoach.co/pet-medication/ibuprofen/ I hope thats helpful, thanks for using PetCoach

Oh no, that's not good! Ibuprofen is toxic to dogs, and the best thing for you to do is take Paxx into the vet immediately. The vet can start decontamination procedures to prevent ibuprofen toxicity from occurring. Please take Paxx into an ER vet or find a vet on call to see him now.

The active ingredient in Advil is ibuprofen. Ibuprofen is toxic as low as about 50 mg/kg. For a 30 pound dog, that is about 700 mg of ibuprofen or about 3 regular strength tablets. It does not sound like Roley could have ingested that much ibuprofen, but if they are extra strength tablets those are 600 mg, so he would only have to eat 1 to potentially have some toxic side effects. If you have any question about how much he may have ingested, I would certainly recommend contacting your veterinarian for a recommendation. Regardless of how much Roley may have ingested, if he does not seem to feel well, does not want to eat or vomits, I would recommend having your vet see him right away.
