Are hostas and daylilies toxic for my dog? Garden safety tips.

Typically you will start to see symptoms of hosta poisoning shortly after ingestion. These symptoms include abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite. It can also cause twisting of the intestines. Because she only ate the tip of the hosta plant, she may not have ingested enough to cause toxic symptoms, but I would monitor her for the next 24-48 hours to be safe. If you see any of the signs I mentioned above, please take her into a vet immediately. Otherwise, she should be just fine but I would prevent her from having any access to this plant in the future.

Lilies are not toxic to dogs although they can cause stomach upset. All parts of the lily plant are quite toxic to cats and cause kidney failure, but dogs seem to be resistant. If Zoey vomits or develops diarrhea you should see your veterinarian.

Unfortunately the daylily is toxic to cats, and clinical signs usually occur between 6-12 hours after exposure. Watch out for lethargy, increased drinking, increased urination, racing heart beat, increased heart rate, vomiting, and diarrhea. If you see any of those signs, rush Dewey into a vet immediately.

Hostas can cause vomiting and diarrhea if enough plant material is ingested, but there would be no long term effects. If Rascal vomits again I would recommend seeing a veterinarian for symptomatic treatment.

Some types of lillies can be very toxic to cats and some lillies are mildly toxic to dogs and cats. Peace lillies are considered toxic plants, but it is because they have crystals of calcium oxalate that can irritate the mouth and GI tract. So, it is possible that Gus could have drooling or irritation of his mouth.
