My dog ate an asiatic lily bulb. Is it toxic? Emergency vet?

Oh no, that's not good that Layla ate a petal from a lily! As I'm sure you know, the lily is toxic to dogs and causes GI upset, anorexia, and tremors. Typically a dog has to eat large amounts of it to cause these symptoms, so one petal may not be enough to cause any problems. I would watch Layla for now, and if you do see any GI upset in the form of vomiting or diarrhea, I can give you a home remedy to try. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, she stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Poor Louie! Unfortunately, EVERY part of the Lily is very toxic and deadly to cats. It causes acute kidney failure. Time is of the essence and I urge you to take Louie to an open Veterinary Emergency hospital for care. It is not wise to wait until tomorrow because sadly it could be too late to reverse the damage to his kidneys. Yes tulip bulbs are indeed to toxic to dogs and cats. Signs of intoxication are vomiting, depression, diarrhea, hypersalivation. So your dog clearly has been poisoned. With large ingestions, more severe symptoms such as an increase in heart rate, changes in respiration, and difficulty breathing may be seen. Should you notice your dog having breathing problems or should he appear very ill you should contact your vet or take him to a Pet ER. Generally it is not life threatening in a healthy dog, however every dog is different and there is no guarantee.

Dogs will be dogs! Hyacinth bulbs and the entire tulip family aren't extremely toxic to dogs, but if consumed in large enough quantities they can cause GI upset and even some cardiorespiratory changes. In this case, if only one bulb was chew (not even swallowed) and you have yet to see any clinical signs, you probably shouldn't spend too much time worrying about it. If you want to be really careful, you can certainly go to the vet and start Cali on a decontamination protocol. This would certainly be the safest option but might be unnecessary. Inducing vomiting at this point in time would be pointless as the stomach has already moved anything that was eaten down into the intestines. You might also consider calling up the pet poison helpline and speak with the toxicology experts over there. They know their stuff and deal with this kind of thing every single day. Hope this helps. Unfortunately, most lilies are toxic to reptiles as well as small animals. Since the ingestion occurred a while ago, you'll need to monitor for symptoms such as lethargy, loss of appetite, decreased/increased thirst and a change in the color/amount of urates produced. Consider an exam with your veterinarian or an experienced herp vet. Baseline blood work should be submitted, then repeated in a few days or sooner if any of the above symptoms develop. Any treatment will be largely symptomatic.

Sounds like the worst is over for her as far as this exposure situation. I would continue to monitor her for any other signs of ongoing problems from the exposure like vomiting, depression, diarrhea, abdominal pain, hypersalivation, anorexia, tremors. If any of these signs return or linger, I would advise seeing your veterinarian ASAP. Kidney failure associated with toxin exposure is most often seen with an initial increase in thirst and urination frequency but as the kidneys become more damaged, they begin to shut down leading to a decreasing amount of urine produced. The kidneys can go into complete failure where no urine is produced at all and the pet quits urinating. So if you are noticing an increase in thirst and urination frequency/large volumes of urine produced or you notice no urination at all, I would consult your vet ASAP so they can get blood and urine to make sure the kidneys are functioning normally. Even if you don't see those signs and you want to make sure everything is ok, go to your vet and let them run some tests. In my opinion, sounds like the worst is over and preventing further exposure to the lily is all you need to do. Again, if you are concerned, your vet can run some tests on her urine and blood and evaluate her organ function. Good luck and I wish you and her the best!
