How can I tell if a dry dog food is high quality and safe for my pet?

Companies that conduct research and have minimal to no issues with recalls are generally going to produce a better diet. You can also watch your dog's body. When pets produce a lot of stool or are gassy, have dull hair coats or experience frequent GI upset, these can be signs of a poor quality food. The brand I recommend is Royal Canin. They meet all the criteria for a high quality pet food including pets producing small bowel movements with good stool quality. Due to these high standards, most pet foods for sale are adequate to provide complete nutrition for pet dogs. What you want is a food that has an AAFCO statement on the package that the food has been used in FEEDING TRIALS. You will find some food that have a statement that they are FORMULATED to meet requirements. Your family veterinarian may have specific preferences for food types. In general, food made by Hills, Purina, Eukanuba, and Royal Canin will have excellent nutrient profiles for your pet. If your dog has specific medical requirements, your family veterinarian can make recommendations for a prescription food.

I apologise if my answer sounded dismissive but there are lots of aspects to consider in food brands. It would be easier if you mentioned a few specific brands that you find you can afford and I could have looked at them and checked if any were suitable for a neutered adult female dog. Does she do any specific activity ? And is she a large breed ? These factors should be considered when choosing an appropriate diet.You would ideally look for high quality meat based protein, of at least 18%, low carbohydrates in form of potatoes or rice, high in natural fat and oils such as essential fatty acids n-6 and n-3 in a ratio of 5:1., vitamins and minerals should be added. You should see the indication on the bag for a complete dog food, which should mean all vitamins and minerals are added for dogs of that age.The lower amount of preservatives the better. Normally dry food has only 10-14% moisture and rely on this for its preservation.

Hello, this seems to be a food made in Germany. I would read the product label to ensure it meets the minimum requirements set by AAFCO for dry dog food either for maintenance or for growth. As long as the product bag states thats it meets these requirements, then it it a good dog food. There are plenty of brands that are formulated to feed the AAFCO requirements. Some are more expensive and perhaps of better quality if they are made with specific ingredients. Some lower cost brands can be made with by-products or meals which are likely of lesser quality. I see what you mean now, thank you for clarifying. I apologize for not answering your question the first time. When you said rations, I would thinking of something else. Dehydrated meats are fine. Dehydrated protein sources are a more concentrated source of digestible protein, and many pet food companies dehydrate the meat. I personally like Royal Canin as a dog food. Its a very high quality dog food. Other brands I would recommend include Hill's Science diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. I hope this helps! :-)

Pedigree is pretty much junk food, as long as the label marks the animal the meat or fat comes from it's fine, if it is not specify it is a good reason to be suspicious. here are a few high quality foods: Orijen, Acana, Evolve and Taste of the wild.
