Is Mera dog dry food a good and healthy choice for my dog's diet?

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center! In the United States, Pet foods are regulated by a nongovernmental organization called AAFCO. They set standards for what makes a complete pet food. Due to these high standards, most pet foods for sale are adequate to provide complete nutrition for pet dogs. What you want is a food that has an AAFCO statement on the package that the food has been used in FEEDING TRIALS. You will find some food that have a statement that they are FORMULATED to meet requirements. Your family veterinarian may have specific preferences for food types. In general, food made by Hills, Purina, Eukanuba, and Royal Canin will have excellent nutrient profiles for your pet. If your dog has specific medical requirements, your family veterinarian can make recommendations for a prescription food.

Canidae is an OK brand, but seems to be more about marketing unnecessary ingredients rather than tailoring food to the dogs specific life stage. It is nutritionally adequate though, which is the most important thing. I would have to evaluate the specific product in question to have more of an opinion about it. The truth about most of these foods is that their claims usually amount to nothing more than that of a fad diet (i.e. paleo or atkins) and are not supported by sufficient evidence (even though they will make it sound like it is). As scientifically trained practitioners, us vets prefer to offer evidenced based treatment and the same goes for feeding suggestions. The most important thing on that bag is a tiny bit of writing under the guaranteed analysis called the AAFCO statement. This statement tells you what actual research went into making the product. It's just designed to appear to humans. Brands of food that I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina Pro Plan, and Iams (Eukanuba). I recommend these brands because they run their own food trials, meet AAFCO feeding standards, and have veterinary nutritionists on staff. They are the only four brands that have these things. I feed my dog Iams and she loves it.

No problem! Happy to help! From what I could research, it appears Bewi's standards for food production are exceptional. All the protein products that come from animals are human grade- meaning they are also approved for human food which is impressive. A lot of dog foods out there do not meet this standard. They also have rigorous quality control testing which is another good mark!

Choose a good quality food with a named protein source. Avoid meat meals and by products. Stay away from store or discount brands. These typically contain low quality ingredients an dmore fillers. A "large breed" formula would be recommended. Premium brands include the Royal Canin line, Acana, Canidae and Orijen. The website www.dogfoodadvisor.com is an excellent resource for comparing foods.

You have a lot of flexibility since she's a young/middle age adult, and I'm assuming she's healthy. Basically any food made by a reputable company is going to be fine for her. There has been more and more evidence coming out recently that grain-free diets aren't healthy for dogs (linked to a particular type of heart failure called Dilated Cardiomyopathy) and raw food also presents risk of salmonella and e.coli to both the dog and family around the dog, so I'd generally recommend staying away from both of those options. The brands I like are Hills, Purina, and Royal Canin because they have veterinary nutritionists on staff, have good quality control, and generally make solid products. I hope that helps a bit!

In my opinion, Purina is not a terrible food and I include that in my list of food recommendations. If Rex has been doing ok on the food for a while now with no problems, then I would keep him on the same food. I would consider switching only if he begins to have problems with digestion. If you want to change food brands, I also recommend Science Diet, Royal Canin or Natural Balance. I hope this helps!
