Why is my Great Dane's belly severely swollen? Could it be bloat?

I would recommend taking Avery to an emergency veterinarian as soon as possible. It sounds like you could be describing an unproductive retch which is a sign of gastric dilation and volvulus (GDV) also known as bloat. GDV is very common in Great Danes and can quickly become fatal if not addressed right away. Of course it's also possible that she is simply gagging or coughing but in my opinion it is much better to be safe and have a veterinarian rule out GDV. They may recommend an x-ray to look at Avery's stomach position.

You are honestly too kind to me! Bloat is fatal without treatment, but if she is acting normally now, then she doesn't have it. You would see unproductive vomiting, restlessness, pacing, a swollen abdomen, and looking at the abdomen. It's good that she stopped the previous behavior, and it could be that she had something stuck in her throat but has now passed it. I would monitor her for now, and if she does show any concerning signs again, have her seen by a vet. As for the swelling of her stomach, it could be possible that Bella is pregnant if she's been around intact male dogs. She could have be going into heat, as the mammary glands can swell when a dog is in heat.

Sheena should be evaluated by a veterinarian right away! If her belly is swollen she could be suffering from bloat (stomach full of air), a GDV (where the stomach bloats and turns on itself) or she could have fluid in her belly or uterus (pyometra). Elliot could be vomiting due to GI irritation, toxin, viral infection. If he appears painful or bloated at all get to a vet immediately as Great Danes can twist their stomachs and this is a life threatening emergency.

If you think Flower's belly is bloated / enlarged, I would have a veterinarian examine her and have x-rays taken of her abdomen. Things that would make a belly distend range from fluid in the abdomen, large amounts of gas (bloat) and tumors. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Poor Bailey! This is a sign of possible bloat and eventually torsion; gastrointestinal inflammation, dietary related or related to infection is possible as well. I would strongly recommend a check up as soon as possible to determine the cause of it. A bloat and eventually torsion is considered a medical/surgical emergency and immediate veterinary care should be seek.

I am so sorry to hear that your pet is so ill. Build up of gas in the stomach is often times caused by either bacteria sitting in the gut (if the intestines are not distended), or due to a foreign body obstruction or partial obstruction (if the intesitnes are also distended). If she has an underling heart condition, this further complicates things. In order to best help you we will need to go over the details of Elsie's condition to get all the necessary information and details of her treatment. This is a very complicated matter and we want you to get all the information needed to make an educated decision moving forward with Elsie. Also I am not sure what symptoms she currently has because you only mentioned that she is "sick". This can mean a lot of different things and should be clarified before recommending any additional treatments for her.
