My Great Dane is gagging but not throwing up. Could it be bloat?

These symptoms may be his way of telling you he is uncomfortable. Pets sometimes eat grass if they have an upset tummy as well (pine sol or otherwise). So, if he has some stomach discomfort, gas, or feels nauseaus he could have these symptoms. Danes are also a breed that is more likely to develop what is called a GDV (gastric dilitation volvulus or bloat). This is where the stomach flips and this is an emergency is this happens. Unfortunately the early symptoms of this more concerning problem can also be what you are reporting (although that problem can also result in gagging/wretching, attempted vomiting, and weakness). It is good that the gum color is normal. If he doesn't seem to be feeling better soon or acts worse then i would recommend he be seen just to make sure this is not something serious. Non-productive retching (ie. trying to vomit without bringing anything up) can be a sign of a life threatening emergency. This can occur in cases of GDV (where the stomach enlarges and twists). In this case, his belly may be large or firm to your touch. Pacing tends to indicate pain and anxiety. His breed is prone to this condition. It would help to have more information about how she is acting, but one of the first things that all vets worry about in a giant breed dog with a swollen abdomen is called a GDV (gastric dilatation volvulus, or "bloat"). This is a very serious problem in which the stomach becomes filled with air or fluid and twists on itself. Affected dogs often have a visibly swollen abdomen, and may also act restless and uncomfortable, pant a lot, and try to vomit frequently. If you think that this could be consistent with how Rosie is acting, I would recommend taking her to an emergency vet immediately, since affected dogs will die in a matter of hours without treatment - GDV is a life-threatening emergency that requires immediate surgery to treat.

Maya could be eating too fast, you may want to try a slow feeder to see if that helps. If it's not improving I would have Maya evaluated by your veterinarian to make sure she doesn't have any congenital or developmental issues that would be causing the vomiting. You can also try to distinguish if she's vomiting versus regurgitating. Vomiting required abdominal effort (like retching or dry heaving), while regurgitation does not.

Usually signs of gastric dilatation and volvulus or torsion include retching, extreme lethargy, collapse, pale gums, distended abdomen and inappetence and with an obstruction vomiting is very common. While this is possible, it is unlikely based on what you have described. He could be experiencing inappetence due to conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have Enzo evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment if this does not improve in the next 24 hours. It sounds as Thandi is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking her to the vet the first chance you get, she will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection she will need an anti vomiting injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better. if the vet thinks it is more serious she will need a blood test and possibly an ultrasound in order to find out what is wrong.
