My Great Dane is sick every night with gas. What can I try next?

Pet's info: Dog | Great Dane | Female | spayed | 9 years and 6 months old | 0 lbs

I have a great Dane 8 years old and for the past months she has been being sick most nights always at night. She has been to the vets several times ,, they have scanned her stomach but can only find a build up of gas , they also found a heart minor. She takes anti sick medication twice per day and medication for her heart . Medication for sickness does not seem to help. She eats a dry sensitive stomach feed. She is a normal dog during the day eats drinks well plays etc . Any ideas would help.

I am so sorry to hear that your pet is so ill. Build up of gas in the stomach is often times caused by either bacteria sitting in the gut (if the intestines are not distended), or due to a foreign body obstruction or partial obstruction (if the intesitnes are also distended).
If she has an underling heart condition, this further complicates things. In order to best help you we will need to go over the details of Elsie's condition to get all the necessary information and details of her treatment. This is a very complicated matter and we want you to get all the information needed to make an educated decision moving forward with Elsie. Also I am not sure what symptoms she currently has because you only mentioned that she is "sick". This can mean a lot of different things and should be clarified before recommending any additional treatments for her.

    Hello. I assume the anti-sick medication you may be giving is either famotidine or omeprazole. Elsie may need something a bit stronger like sucralfate. You might also consider trying a diet trial with a more directed diet such as one for allergies. I have had many dogs do much better when switched to Hill's Prescription Diet z/d. I also put these dogs on an omega-3 fatty acid supplement, generally giving 20-30 mg/kg 1-2 times daily & adding a good probiotic to Elsie's regimen. Fortiflora is a very good one & available OTC. You can try feeding Duke a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If this doesn't help, have him seen by a vet.

Usually signs of gastric dilatation and volvulus or torsion include retching, extreme lethargy, collapse, pale gums, distended abdomen and inappetence and with an obstruction vomiting is very common. While this is possible, it is unlikely based on what you have described. He could be experiencing inappetence due to conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have Enzo evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment if this does not improve in the next 24 hours. They would be able to check for these possibilities and others depending on the findings on exam. Treatment would be based on findings. Good luck and have a great day! Hoping for a speedy recovery!

My dog has a bloated, gassy stomach. What causes it? What can I do?
Hello sorry to hear about Lilly. Things I would worry about with severely distended GI is a foreign body that may be causing obstruction. Other causes such as an infectious gastritis or enteritis can also cause severe gas. Finally, any inflammation of the GI tract secondary to dietary indiscretions could also cause uniform gas dilation and ileus (decreased GI motility). I would consider rechecking x-rays to compare the pattern of the gas in a couple of hours. Additionally, if Lilly is vomiting or having diarrhea or a decreased appetite, I would recommend having her re-evaluated if the signs persist. If this is gas alone, although it may be very uncomfortable for Lilly, know that it will pass on its own within several hours. However, if Lilly seems to be doing worse, have her evaluated immediately. Hope this helps and best of luck.

I’m so sorry to hear about Murphy! Unfortunately these cases are hard because we don’t know what the underlying cause is. Does gastric distress include vomiting and diarrhea or just vomiting? Possible next steps might be a parvo test, bloodwork (including a pancreatitis check), or an abdominal ultrasound. Unfortunately, It could be a toxin, an anaphylactoid reaction, or several other things that are not easy to diagnose. Certainly symptomatic care with anti nausea medication, anti-diarrheal medication, and IV or subcutaneous (under the skin) fluids are the mainstay of treatment for these types of symptoms regardless of cause. Head into the emergency vet if Murphy had vomited more than twice or if he seems listless, weak, or mentally dull. Best of luck to you and Murphy!

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Ragnar (LOVE the name, I am a Vikings fan!) He could be sore from playing during the day or he could be having abdominal cramping from gas. He could start to vomit or have diarrhea. I would get him up and take him outside to see what he will do. If the whimpering and restless continues I would take him to an Emergency hospital now instead of waiting for your Vet to open. Why is my Great Dane's belly severely swollen? Could it be bloat?
Oh dear! It would help to have more information about how she is acting, but one of the first things that all vets worry about in a giant breed dog with a swollen abdomen is called a GDV (gastric dilatation volvulus, or "bloat"). This is a very serious problem in which the stomach becomes filled with air or fluid and twists on itself. Affected dogs often have a visibly swollen abdomen, and may also act restless and uncomfortable, pant a lot, and try to vomit frequently. If you think that this could be consistent with how Rosie is acting, I would recommend taking her to an emergency vet immediately, since affected dogs will die in a matter of hours without treatment - GDV is a life-threatening emergency that requires immediate surgery to treat.

Great Dane breathing heavy, pacing, eating grass. Could it be bloat?
These symptoms may be his way of telling you he is uncomfortable. Pets sometimes eat grass if they have an upset tummy as well (pine sol or otherwise). So, if he has some stomach discomfort, gas, or feels nauseaus he could have these symptoms. Danes are also a breed that is more likely to develop what is called a GDV (gastric dilitation volvulus or bloat). This is where the stomach flips and this is an emergency is this happens. Unfortunately the early symptoms of this more concerning problem can also be what you are reporting (although that problem can also result in gagging/wretching, attempted vomiting, and weakness). It is good that the gum color is normal. If he doesn't seem to be feeling better soon or acts worse then i would recommend he be seen just to make sure this is not something serious.
