Why is my Great Dane puppy crying with stomach pain at night?

This sounds like he’s in pain. He could have back pain from a bulging intervertebral disc, or be constipated, or have hip pain. This sounds serious so I recommend a veterinary exam soon. With bloat they look bloated and they go from fine to very distressed in a few hours and then it’s life threatening. If this has been going on longer without a swollen abdomen then bloat is less likely. Regardless, he’s in pain and needs veterinary care. I am so sorry to hear that your pet is so ill. Build up of gas in the stomach is often times caused by either bacteria sitting in the gut (if the intestines are not distended), or due to a foreign body obstruction or partial obstruction (if the intesitnes are also distended). If she has an underling heart condition, this further complicates things. In order to best help you we will need to go over the details of Elsie's condition to get all the necessary information and details of her treatment. This is a very complicated matter and we want you to get all the information needed to make an educated decision moving forward with Elsie. Also I am not sure what symptoms she currently has because you only mentioned that she is "sick". This can mean a lot of different things and should be clarified before recommending any additional treatments for her. Usually signs of gastric dilatation and volvulus or torsion include retching, extreme lethargy, collapse, pale gums, distended abdomen and inappetence and with an obstruction vomiting is very common. While this is possible, it is unlikely based on what you have described. He could be experiencing inappetence due to conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have Enzo evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment if this does not improve in the next 24 hours. I would recommend taking Avery to an emergency veterinarian as soon as possible. It sounds like you could be describing an unproductive retch which is a sign of gastric dilation and volvulus (GDV) also known as bloat. GDV is very common in Great Danes and can quickly become fatal if not addressed right away. Of course it's also possible that she is simply gagging or coughing but in my opinion it is much better to be safe and have a veterinarian rule out GDV. They may recommend an x-ray to look at Avery's stomach position.

It could be that Rasta has pain in his back, hips, and/or joints due to arthritis or degenerative joint disease. This is common in giant breed dogs, and I would have him seen by a vet. He may benefit from pain medications, which the vet can prescribe. Rimadyl (an NSAID) is a good drug to give to help with the symptoms of arthritis. I also recommend giving him glucosamine or chondroitin sulfate supplements. They provide the necessary nutrients for cartilage repair and function. Use of them helps relieve some of the symptoms of arthritis, and you can use it in conjuction with Rimadyl to help maximize relief from his symptoms.

These symptoms may be his way of telling you he is uncomfortable. Pets sometimes eat grass if they have an upset tummy as well (pine sol or otherwise). So, if he has some stomach discomfort, gas, or feels nauseaus he could have these symptoms. Danes are also a breed that is more likely to develop what is called a GDV (gastric dilitation volvulus or bloat). This is where the stomach flips and this is an emergency is this happens. Unfortunately the early symptoms of this more concerning problem can also be what you are reporting (although that problem can also result in gagging/wretching, attempted vomiting, and weakness). It is good that the gum color is normal. If he doesn't seem to be feeling better soon or acts worse then i would recommend he be seen just to make sure this is not something serious. Elliot could be vomiting due to GI irritation, toxin, viral infection. If he appears painful or bloated at all get to a vet immediately as Great Danes can twist their stomachs and this is a life threatening emergency.
