My dog is in pain from gas. What can I do to help him feel better?

Unfortunately, I can't recommend any specific treatment because there are many different possible causes. He could have intestinal parasites, an intestinal obstruction, gastroenteritis, or an endocrine or metabolic disease (issue with internal organs that is making him feel overall crappy, rather than something specifically wrong with the intestinal tract). Additionally, many medications for humans aren't safe for our pups. He really does need to go to the vet for further testing and treatment. You can also talk to the vet about giving him anti-anxiety medications for future visits to help with his anxiety. I hope he's feeling better soon.

Build up of gas in the stomach is often times caused by either bacteria sitting in the gut (if the intestines are not distended), or due to a foreign body obstruction or partial obstruction (if the intesitnes are also distended). Oh no. Poor Rocky. He may benefit from anti-gas over the counter medicine if that's the case. Since we haven't seen him in person and actually examined him, we can't recommend a particular medicine to use, but your vet should be able to recommend the appropriate one for him and his size. You can also try gently massaging his belly to move the gas around. For the future you should consider placing him on an easily digestible food such Iams limited ingredient or the Innova (Evo) brand for sensitive stomach. However, I am a little suspicious that this may not be all that is going on with him, especially if he is as painful as you describe or doesn't respond to the anti-gas therapy. It may be beneficial to have the vet take another look at him to ensure there is nothing else going on there. I hope Rocky feels better soon.

Mojo's symptoms may be indicative of gastroenteritis (a gut infection), gastrointestinal parasites, food intolerance or food allergies, pancreatitis, or inflammatory bowel disease. As you can see, the list of possibilities is long and varied. I would recommend taking him to the vet. They can perform a full physical exam and assess for any areas of pain, which would be supportive of pancreatitis (for example). They may recommend testing a stool sample for parasites, senior blood work, and/or taking x-rays of the abdomen. At minimum, they can prescribe medicine to help with the tummy upset and improve his comfort. In the meantime, I would continue with the probiotic, and try small, frequent meals of a bland diet such as boiled chicken and white rice. This may be easier for his tummy to digest. I would also think back to any new food or treats that were introduced prior to this problem starting, and if so, make sure to eliminate them in case they are contributing to his symptoms. You can give him some gas drops to see if that helps. You can actually use the Children's Gas Drops like this one: https://www.target.com/p/little-remedies-gas-relief-digestive-health-treatments-1-fl-oz/-/A-77594295 He can have 0.6mls by mouth (to the 2nd line of the dropper) up to every 6 hours as needed. If you have to give it for more than 2 days I would be a bit worried and at that stage he should see a vet. Hope this helps. Hello sorry to hear about Lilly. Things I would worry about with severely distended GI is a foreign body that may be causing obstruction. Other causes such as an infectious gastritis or enteritis can also cause severe gas. Finally, any inflammation of the GI tract secondary to dietary indiscretions could also cause uniform gas dilation and ileus (decreased GI motility). I would consider rechecking x-rays to compare the pattern of the gas in a couple of hours. Additionally, if Lilly is vomiting or having diarrhea or a decreased appetite, I would recommend having her re-evaluated if the signs persist. If this is gas alone, although it may be very uncomfortable for Lilly, know that it will pass on its own within several hours. However, if Lilly seems to be doing worse, have her evaluated immediately. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Hello. I am sorry Bruno isn't feeling well. Gas in dogs results in a sore painful belly, not wanting to eat, and low energy. Gas should resolve within a day, if the problem is continuing then Bruno should be seen by a vet. X-rays can show what is happening. If gas is reoccurring frequently then you can try changing the food. The mediaction you were given is ok for one or two uses however repeated uses of sorbitol can cause electrolyte changes. Discuss with your vet about options for Bruno. Good luck with him!
