My Great Dane is in pain, shaking, won't eat, and can't poop. What's wrong?

Usually signs of gastric dilatation and volvulus or torsion include retching, extreme lethargy, collapse, pale gums, distended abdomen and inappetence and with an obstruction vomiting is very common. While this is possible, it is unlikely based on what you have described. He could be experiencing inappetence due to conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have Enzo evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment if this does not improve in the next 24 hours. They would be able to check for these possibilities and others depending on the findings on exam. Treatment would be based on findings. Good luck and have a great day! Hoping for a speedy recovery!

It could be that Rasta has pain in his back, hips, and/or joints due to arthritis or degenerative joint disease. This is common in giant breed dogs, and I would have him seen by a vet. He may benefit from pain medications, which the vet can prescribe. Rimadyl (an NSAID) is a good drug to give to help with the symptoms of arthritis. I also recommend giving him glucosamine or chondroitin sulfate supplements. They provide the necessary nutrients for cartilage repair and function. Use of them helps relieve some of the symptoms of arthritis, and you can use it in conjuction with Rimadyl to help maximize relief from his symptoms.

He could be sore from playing during the day or he could be having abdominal cramping from gas. He could start to vomit or have diarrhea. I would get him up and take him outside to see what he will do. If the whimpering and restless continues I would take him to an Emergency hospital now instead of waiting for your Vet to open. Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about Danny. Sounds like he is having some pain and discomfort near the rear of his body. This could be many things including hip or joint pain, anal gland problems, problems associated with the gastritis as you described, etc. I would advise that you take Danny in to your vet and let them get a thorough history and then perform a physical exam. Possible tests that they may suggest would be a rectal exam, orthopedic exam of the rear legs, anal gland evaluation, fecal tests, blood tests, and possibly x-rays to evaluate his hips. Once a diagnosis is made, a sound treatment plan can be discussed. Good luck with Danny.

These symptoms may be his way of telling you he is uncomfortable. Pets sometimes eat grass if they have an upset tummy as well (pine sol or otherwise). So, if he has some stomach discomfort, gas, or feels nauseaus he could have these symptoms. Danes are also a breed that is more likely to develop what is called a GDV (gastric dilitation volvulus or bloat). This is where the stomach flips and this is an emergency is this happens. Unfortunately the early symptoms of this more concerning problem can also be what you are reporting (although that problem can also result in gagging/wretching, attempted vomiting, and weakness). It is good that the gum color is normal. If he doesn't seem to be feeling better soon or acts worse then i would recommend he be seen just to make sure this is not something serious. Hi! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Thanks for the pictures! Gino's testicles look normal to me. I don't see any evidence of skin disease. I don't think he is shaking because of his testicles or penis. I am worried about him with the constant shaking and now not eating and bloody diarrhea. Causes of bloody diarrhea are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, toxin ingestion, metabolic conditions like liver/kidney disease or Addison's disease, pancreatitis, dietary indiscretion, food allergy/intolerance. You can start a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day until 2 days of normal stool. Gino sounds like he is significantly painful: he could have joint disease, Lyme disease, panosteitis or other growing disease. He REALLY needs to see a Vet at least for an exam. You can ask for a financial estimate before agreeing to tests and medications. With out examining him myself I can't tell you exactly what is wrong. I hope this helps and I wish Gino the best~!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Gage! I would worry that Gage has hurt his back or neck. This is how they tend to act. They also don’t jump up in furniture like normal and avoid the stairs. They cry when touched, picked up or move. I would take him in to your vet today before the holiday for an exam. I treat neck and back pain with anti-inflammatories, muscle relaxants and pain medications. I wish Gage a speedy recovery!
