How much food should my 4.5-month-old Golden Retriever puppy eat?

Determine how much to feed a puppy can certainly be quite confusing! I'm glad to hear that you are offering Bourbon food four times per day. In another month, you can decrease his feeding to three times a day, and eventually twice per day. The Royal Canin Maxi Starter food is great for growing puppies! By 2 months of age, Bourbon should be able to start chewing through dry kibble, so you can start to wean him off of the water soaked kibble over the next few weeks. Cerelac is not a necessary component of any dog's diet, so I would recommend stopping that and strictly feeding the balanced puppy food. Based upon the feeding guide for your puppy food, Bourbon should eat around 250 - 260 gm per day, meaning that he should eat around 60 - 65 gm per meal. Toby is absolutely adorable! You have a great question. He should still be eating three times a day at this age, once morning, noon, and evening. When he turns six months old, he can be fed twice a day (morning and evening). As for how much at each meal, take the daily recommended allotment on his bag of food, and divide it into three equal portions to feed throughout the day. Once he reaches six months of age, divide it into two equal portions. I hope this helps :-)

A maintenance diet would be 1 cup (8 ounces) of dry food per 30lbs body weight daily. For example, if Rooney weighs 60lbs then he would need 2 cups of food daily. This amount can be adjusted up or down based on activity, body weight and body condition.

Oh my goodness, too much cuteness!!! Any of the premium dog foods are good. The pet food industry has come a very long way in recent years. I am a personal fan of Purina foods. Which ever food you choose I would recommend that it be one specifically formulated for large breed dogs. As far as how much to feed, the recommendations on the bag are generally a good guideline. You just want to make sure that you are weighing Toby every couple of weeks and adjusting the amount of food accordingly. The goal is to ensure that he is receiving his nutrients, but also to make sure he is not an overweight puppy (or adult). His hips and joints will thank you later. Bravo sounds like a typical Golden Retriever! They can be very food motivated. I would ask your vet about the proper amounts to feed him based on his weight, and they'll be able to tell you if he's growing aappropriately as well. We don't want large breed dogs growing too fast as it can predispose them to joint problems. Best of luck!
