How much food should my 1.5-year-old golden retriever eat daily?

Hello, Buddy looks like such a sweet puppy. A puppy like Buddy should be eating a puppy food designed for large breed puppies. A general estimate is he should consume approximately 4 cups of kibble per day. This should be divided into 3 meals & not given all at one time. I would recommend a good quality large breed puppy formula such as Royal canin or iams. Feed twice daily. Amount varies by nutritional content of the food so follow label directions on how much to feed. Good luck with your pup!

There is no one "best" food. The optimal diet is one that your dog eats, can easily be bought and does not cause stomach upset. That said, certain brands are better than others. Stay away from store or discount brands. These typically contain low quality ingredients and more fillers. Better or premium brands include ProPlan, Canidae, Orijen, Royal Canin and Acana.

Determine how much to feed a puppy can certainly be quite confusing! I'm glad to hear that you are offering Bourbon food four times per day. In another month, you can decrease his feeding to three times a day, and eventually twice per day. The Royal Canin Maxi Starter food is great for growing puppies! By 2 months of age, Bourbon should be able to start chewing through dry kibble, so you can start to wean him off of the water soaked kibble over the next few weeks. Cerelac is not a necessary component of any dog's diet, so I would recommend stopping that and strictly feeding the balanced puppy food. Based upon the feeding guide for your puppy food, Bourbon should eat around 250 - 260 gm per day, meaning that he should eat around 60 - 65 gm per meal. I calculate about 1,400 kCal per day for a moderately active 75 lb dog with an ideal body condition. An overweight dog who is a couch potato would need fewer calories. The appropriate amount of fat varies but is usually between 20-30% of the calories. Unless Rowen requires a very low fat diet I probably wouldn’t worry about the extra fat from the fish oil. The appropriate dose depends on what you’re using it for and the EPA and DHA contents of the particular capsule.

Toby is absolutely adorable! You have a great question. He should still be eating three times a day at this age, once morning, noon, and evening. When he turns six months old, he can be fed twice a day (morning and evening). As for how much at each meal, take the daily recommended allotment on his bag of food, and divide it into three equal portions to feed throughout the day. Hello and thank you for reaching out to PetCoach. When we calculate the daily caloric requirements for dogs, we use a calculation called RER, or resting energy requirement. For a 75 lb dog, this value is 985 kcal/day. Since he is young and active, we multiply this amount by a factor to account for this. In his case, his total calories that he should ingest per day is between 1200-1300. This should help him maintain the weight he is currently at.
