My puppy is always hungry. How much food should a growing puppy eat?

Puppies do tend to have large appetites because they are growing so quickly. I'd first make sure you are feeding her a puppy formulated food. Puppies need higher amounts of calories, protein, and calcium than adult dogs, and a puppy formulated food would provide that for Bonnie. I would recommend feeding her a high quality puppy formulated food, such as Royal Canin or Hills Science diet. Finally, I recommend feeding according to the package instructions on the food to make sure she is getting the correct amount, and avoid giving her human food, as there are many that are poisonous to a dog.

Hello, Buddy looks like such a sweet puppy. A puppy like Buddy should be eating a puppy food designed for large breed puppies. A general estimate is he should consume approximately 4 cups of kibble per day. This should be divided into 3 meals & not given all at one time. Determine how much to feed a puppy can certainly be quite confusing! I'm glad to hear that you are offering Bourbon food four times per day. In another month, you can decrease his feeding to three times a day, and eventually twice per day. The Royal Canin Maxi Starter food is great for growing puppies! By 2 months of age, Bourbon should be able to start chewing through dry kibble, so you can start to wean him off of the water soaked kibble over the next few weeks. Cerelac is not a necessary component of any dog's diet, so I would recommend stopping that and strictly feeding the balanced puppy food. Based upon the feeding guide for your puppy food, Bourbon should eat around 250 - 260 gm per day, meaning that he should eat around 60 - 65 gm per meal. A 9 week old puppy should generally be fed 3 times a day to prevent hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Also, scarfing down food can put a large breed puppy at risk for ingestion of excess air and bloat which can be life threatening. I recommend adding a feeding, perhaps of the same amount as the other two and consulting with your vet re: body condition scoring. If your puppy currently has a low body condition score (google body conditon scoring dogs for a diagram), continue with the extra feeding until Luke is at an ideal body condition (noticeable waist but ribs/spine not prominent). If rapid eating persists, purchasing a puzzle feeder to slow down feedings (available on Amazon.com) is recommended. Good luck!

Oh my goodness, too much cuteness!!! Any of the premium dog foods are good. The pet food industry has come a very long way in recent years. I am a personal fan of Purina foods. Which ever food you choose I would recommend that it be one specifically formulated for large breed dogs. As far as how much to feed, the recommendations on the bag are generally a good guideline. You just want to make sure that you are weighing Toby every couple of weeks and adjusting the amount of food accordingly. The goal is to ensure that he is receiving his nutrients, but also to make sure he is not an overweight puppy (or adult). His hips and joints will thank you later. Puppies, and Labradors especially, tend to be food motives and some of them can be food obsessed. May sure your puppy is not too thin, if he is then increase the food. Purina 1 is a good diet but if you are looking to change, Royal Canin makes a diet specifically for Labs and it addresses their healthy appetites! They make a puppy and an adult formula and the pets tend to do really well on this diet. Adding canned veggies can also help him to feel full. Get the no salt added variety and watch for any diarrhea as it increases his fiber. Stick to peas, carrots or green beans.
