Daily calories & fat for a 75lb Golden Retriever, plus fish oil?

Hello and thank you for reaching out to PetCoach. When we calculate the daily caloric requirements for dogs, we use a calculation called RER, or resting energy requirement. For a 75 lb dog, this value is 985 kcal/day. Since he is young and active, we multiply this amount by a factor to account for this. In his case, his total calories that he should ingest per day is between 1200-1300. This should help him maintain the weight he is currently at. Hi Fred! Male Neutered Golden Retrievers should weigh between 65-75 pounds. 90lbs may be a little overweight for Milo. You should be able to easily feel Milo's ribs but not see them. When you look from above, he should be an hourglass shape. When you look at Milo from the side while he stands, his midsection should have an upward slope. Extra supplements can mean extra calories for Milo, so I would talk to your primary are veterinarian about the possibility of starting Milo on particular supplements based on his need and medical history. A maintenance diet would be 1 cup (8 ounces) of dry food per 30lbs body weight daily. For example, if Rooney weighs 60lbs then he would need 2 cups of food daily. This amount can be adjusted up or down based on activity, body weight and body condition.

To be honest, I'm not sure why Rx recommend double if the values are very similar. It could be that they are suggesting a higher daily amount for your dog than Nordic naturals. There is a dosage range, which can go from 1,000 mg fish oil containing 300 mg of EPA/DHA combined for 30 pounds of body weight to a dose maximum of 1,000 mg fish oil per 10 pounds of body weight. Hello, the calorie per cup measurement in any dog food means that if your dog needs to eat 500 calories per day then you'll be giving overall less amount of food to meet his caloric demand with the food that has more calories per cup. With either food, you will have to meet his daily caloric demand. What this means for you, is that you'll likely go through the dog food with less calories per-cup much quicker than the dog food that is more dense in calories per cup. Great question! Oakley can get 1,000 mg fish oil containing 300 mg of EPA/DHA combined for every 30 pounds of body weight. For her weight, I would give her 3,000mg. You can get her dog specific fish oil pills from a pet store, but human ones are fine as well. I hope this helps!

You are welcome! It is preferable that you give the 1,000mg containing 300mg of EPA and DHA per 30 pounds, but you can give a dose range between 20-55mg combined EPA and DHA per pound of body weight. With the Trader Joe's supplement, that's about 29mg per pound of body weight of the combined EPA and DHA so it's within the safe dose range. I'm sorry I wasn't clearer before, and I hope this clears up any confusion :-)
