My dog refuses Denamarin. How to give it an hour before eating?

While the Denamarin should not be given with food per se, you could give them with a bit of peanut butter or cheese just to make it more appetizing. For optimal absorption, tablets should be given on an empty stomach, at least one hour before feeding, as the presence of food decreases the absorption of S-Adenosylmethionine. For those owners who have difficulty administering tablets to their pets, Denamarin tablet(s) may be disguised in a small bite of food. Pill pocket is fine too.

Denamarin isn't a treatment for liver disease, it is a potent antioxidant that can help limit further damage as the liver heals. Missing one dose won't hurt. It is best given on an empty stomach, but it can make some pets nauseous. In that case, you can give it with a tablespoon of wet food or a piece of meat or cheese.

I usually recommend that the medicine be directly given in the dog's mouth instead of mixing in the food. Some dogs are very good at avoiding the medicine in their food and may spit it out. In these cases you may not know if he got the medicine or not. Coating the pill, or mixing liquid medication with something tasty is the best way to get them to eat it. Pills can be covered in butter, ghee, or peanut butter to help make them more tasty. You could try pill pockets, or potentially crush it and mix it with a bite of canned all-meat baby food. If that doesn't work, and you're really struggling to get the medication into him, I recommend reaching out to your vet. We understand that many cats are nearly impossible to get pills into! There are other liver support options, such as milk thistle, that can come in liquid form if you need a "plan B" option. It wouldn't be quite as good as Denamarin, but better than nothing! That is definitely pretty strange. The one thing I can think of that might cause that is related to when you are giving the Denamarin. It is meant to be given at least two hours PRIOR TO a meal to allow for best absorption. If you are giving it sooner than that or with the meal, it is more likely to prevent it from absorbing appropriately. If this isn't the case, I would recommend discussing this with your internal medicine vet to see if he has an opinion on the matter. Hope this helps.

If she is not on dietary restricitons you can try hiding the pill in some soft cheese or peanut butter. Sometimes canned dog food works. . Some dogs just won't eat medications on food. If that is the case you may have to actually put the pill in the back of her mouth and get her to swallow.
